Jets Sign Antwan Barnes

Monday, March 18th, 2013

Jet fans have been pleading with their favorite team to add a true pass rusher to the roster for years, now they finally got one in Antwan Barnes. After signing Antonio Garay and Willie Colon over the weekend, new GM John Idzik once again went bargain shopping with the addition of the veteran outside linebacker.

Earlier today Barnes tweeted, “Green and white it is… just want to thank coach rex coach DT and mr idzik for the opportunity.. and to the fans I won’t let you down #jets.” It seems Barnes was a bit too excited and jumped the gun as an hour later he tweeted, “Wait a minute… not official yet… in talks now… #letsgetadealdone.” But now Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News is reporting the deal is in fact done.  (more…)

Free Agency Update: Idzik Exercising Patience

Thursday, March 14th, 2013

As we enter the third day of free agency the Jets have released Sione Po’uha, lost Yeremiah Bell (Cardinals), LaRon Landry (Colts), Mike DeVito (Chiefs), Shonn Greene (Titans) and could be on the verge of losing Dustin Keller to the Dolphins. Meanwhile the only additions to the roster are David Garrard and bringing back FB Lex Hilliard, so what gives? What’s the plan here? Are they going to sign anybody? What’s going on with Revis?

The answer to all of these questions is patience.

While the Jets have lost a handful of impact players, lost isn’t really the right word since they never made much of an effort to keep any of those players. The Jets would have loved to keep DeVito and Landry, but they knew they couldn’t win a bidding war for their services so the Jets have been prepared to move on. They would like to keep Keller at a reasonable price, but they’re also inclined to let him go if the Dolphins or anyone else is willing to pony up a nice chunk of change for the consistently inconsistent tight end. Greene was never coming back, but still he found a home with the Titans who paid him $3 million a year. (more…)

Jets Release Sione Po’uha

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

Just a year after signing Sione Po’uha to a three-year, $15 million contract the Jets have released the 34-year-old nose tackle.

Back issues were a constant problem for Po’uha last season and when he was actually able to get on the field he didn’t resemble anything close to the Po’uha of year’s past, as he constantly got pushed around. (more…)

Jets Offer Jeff Cumberland $1.32 Million Tender

Friday, March 8th, 2013

According to Connor Orr of The Star-Ledger the Jets have reportedly “made a qualifying offer,” to Jeff Cumberland at a “low-level tender that will cost the team $1.32 million.” This type of low-level tender does not allow for the Jets to receive a draft pick if another team signs Cumberland, it would simply give the Jets the right to match any offer another team might make. If the Jets decided at that point to match the offer they can keep him and if someone simply out prices them they’ll let him walk and get nothing in return.

It’s unlikely another team will swoop in and offer Cumberland a substantial difference considering the amount of other options in free agency and the draft so it seems Cumberland will be with the Jets this oncoming season, now the question becomes will he be the starting tight end or the number two?
