Maybin Continues Causing ‘Mayhem’

Florham Park, N.J.- In two years in Buffalo the first-round draft pick, Aaron Maybin, failed to record a sack. Through only eight games as a Jet, Maybin has already caused enough mayhem to earn him five sacks to go along with three forced fumbles. Whatever the reason for the change in production, Rex Ryan will happily take it.

Going back to the scouting reports on Maybin coming out of college, everyone agreed the kid had exceptional speed and length to cause all types of problems as a speed pass rusher in the NFL. Everyone also agreed that his lack of strength and bulk could make it easy for Maybin to get lost in the shuffle at the next level. For two years in Buffalo it seemed the negatives far outweighed the positives as he struggled to the point that the Bills just decided to wash their hands of him.

The opportunity with the Jets provided Maybin a second chance to prove that he does indeed belong in the NFL. On a defense like the Bills had the past two seasons it was easy for opposing offenses to render Maybin ineffective, line him up on a Jet defense that is loaded everywhere except in the area of pass rush and it ends up being a perfect match and the numbers prove that to be the case.

“Obviously, Aaron Maybin, he had six quarterback hits, two sacks (and) made a great play on the screen pass.” Rex Ryan said on Monday, “The all-hustle team right there. I really like that about Maybin. He plays with his hair on fire and it’s encouraging to watch.”

It’s the speed and hustle in Maybin that sets him apart from the rest of the Jets defense and is why Ryan is grateful that the Jets were able to add him to this already talented roster. According to ProFootballFocus.com Maybin brought pressure on only 5.5% of his rushes as a member of the Bills, but as a Jet that number is up to 18.3%. Even more impressive, ProFootballFocus.com points out that Maybin has five sacks on just 110 snaps, which works out to one sack every 22 snaps and is the best rate in the league for players with at least five sacks.

Ryan is obviously enjoying what he has seen from Maybin this season, but with numbers like those one thing becomes painfully obvious. The Jets need to get this man on the field more. Making your place known on a football team takes time, but through eight games Maybin has proven he can help the Jets in ways no one else on the roster can.

The Bills might have felt like they had no use for him, although they had to have second thoughts about the decision during last Sunday’s game, but as they say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. And as it turns out the Jets seem to have found a diamond for them to polish from the trash heap of the Bills.
