Jets Release Cromartie
In a move that should surprise no one the Jets informed cornerback Antonio Cromartie that he would be released. The Jets will save $9.5 million against the cap by releasing Cromartie and he acknowledged after the season he knew this move would be coming.
Cromartie took to Twitter to thank the Jets organization and the fans after officially hearing the news from the Jets. “I would like 2 thank the Jets organization so much with helping me grow as a leader and a player. S/O 2 my teammates I wish u guys the best.” Cromartie tweeted before adding another tweet for the fans, “I would also like to give a big up to The Jets Fan base. Thank you for all the support thru my 4 yr career with you. Thank you again.”
The growth and maturity of Cromartie over the past four years is incredibly obvious to anyone who has spent any time covering or even watching coverage of him over his time here, but he turns 30 on April 15 and coming off a down year due to reoccurring hip issues and there was no way the Jets could justify keeping him at that price tag.
Cromartie is now immediately free to negotiate and sign with anyone else, but if the Jets don’t sign a big free agent corner like Alterraun Verner (who they have reportedly inquired about signing) and no other team overpays for Cromartie he could very well end up back in the green and white. Cromartie has been quite vocal of his love for the Jets organization, coaching staff, fans and the area he lives in and would absolutely love to return if the two sides can agree to a price.
For now we’ll have to see how things pan out with Verner and the rest of the market, but don’t rule out Cromartie returning next season. Cromartie certainly won’t be the last player the Jets release as you can expect Santonio Holmes to be released any second now and Mark Sanchez to be released or at least have a restructured deal if the Jets can’t find a preferably backup quarterback on the market.
