Jets Activate Smith, Waive Montgomery

The NFL trade deadline has passed and as expected, the Jets remained relatively quiet on a day that provided only one boom. The 0-5 Lions shipped disgruntled WR Roy Williams to the Cowboys for a first-round pick in 2009, along with a third- and sixth-round selection that year….Seems a bit much for Dallas to trade away, but the reward of pairing Williams with Terrell Owens could be worth the cost.

As the Jets prepare to battle the 1-4 Oakland Raiders in the ‘Black Hole’ Sunday, they were forced to make a decision on S Eric Smith, whose roster exemption following a one-game suspension ended today. As expected, the Jets activated Smith from the Reserve/Suspended List, and waived OL Will Montgomery from the 53-man roster and released LB Brandon Renkart from the practice squad.

Montgomery was active for the first three games of 2008 but did appear in a game before being waived by the Jets on Sept. 25, 2008. He then re-signed with the Jets on Sept. 29 but was inactive in last Sunday’s 26-14 win over the Bengals.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s matchup with the Raiders, Mangini did not name a starter at the safety position alongside Kerry Rhodes, but did explain that he was “not opposed” to playing both Smith and Abram Elam extensively.
