Sheldon Richardson impresses at camp
Sheldon Richardson wasn’t the most popular pick amongst Jets fans, but he should become a fan favorite quickly.
It sure didn’t take him long to impress the coaches.
“I don’t want to put expectations too high but, ah, yeah he was impressive to say the least,” said Rex Ryan.
On the first day of rookie minicamp Richardson made plays all over the field, lining up at the nose and 3-technique. He’ll probably be seeing time at both when the season starts.
No, Richardson isn’t bulking up. He is expected to start the season weighing even less than the 294 lbs he was listed at prior to the draft, but Ryan plans on shifting his lineman around.
“Depending on the call you can have a guy at nose, you can have a 3, you can have a 5,” said Ryan. “There are several different things he can do.”
But throw out his size, and even his position. To Rex, what he loves most is that Richardson lives for football.
“The guy loves to play, you can already tell that. If you doubled that practice he would’ve been fine. The main thing with us, is in our system just take a good defensive player and it doesn’t matter.”
“I have fun. I’m a kid out there,” Richardson added.
If anything Richardson was going a little too hard out there, with his notable mistakes coming from overrunning plays.
He managed to stand out off the field as well. While most media members flocked to the more high profile players Geno Smith and Dee Milliner, Richardson could be seen bobbing in between the photogs and reporters trying to coax a smile from Milliner during his interview.
Needless to say, he should be a fun player to keep an eye on throughout the season.
