Mangold and Cro get Pro Bowl call

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014

HONOLULU, HI – The Jets, who’s roster was shut out in Pro Bowl voting this season suddenly have two players on their way to Honolulu. Center Nick Mangold who was voted a first alternate will replace Seahawks center Max Unger who can’t play because his team is in the Superbowl.

After initially being shut out, the Jets now have two players headed for Hawaii. (JetsInsider.com Photo)

Cornerback Cromartie, a second alternate, who self admittedly is coming off possibly the worse season of his career, was added to the roster due to Patriots CB Aqib Talib getting injured during the AFC Championship this past Sunday against Denver.

This will be the fifth Pro Bowl appearance for Mangold and the third for Cromartie. The Pro Bowl takes place this Sunday at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu and is being broadcast by NBC.

Jets sign Rex to multi-year extension

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Jets have signed Head Coach Rex Ryan to a multi-year contract extension.

Rex Ryan is all smiles today after agreeing to a multi-year contract extension with the Jets.

Contract details were not disclosed. Ryan was entering the final year of his contract next season.  The Coach’s job security has been questioned by Fans and the media all season after three consecutive non-playoff years. Owner Woody Johnson announced Ryan’s job was not in jeopardy after the team’s final game, a win against Miami. There have been rumors since then that an extension was in the works.

UPDATE: Various sources are reporting that Ryan’s contract is through 2016 although essentially, based on incentive clauses the deal is only guaranteed through 2015.

A statement released by the team said Ryan was pleased with the extension.

“I want to thank Woody, John, our players, our coaches and our fans for all of their support, said Ryan. I’m no different than any of our fans. I’m an ordinary guy that’s been given an unbelievable opportunity. I’ve said all along – I’m glad to be a Jet. I’m happy to be a Jet. That’s never changed. I know what we all want and we’re striving to get there. But it’s not about me. We’re already into our off-season planning. There are a lot of areas where we can improve and we can’t wait to get this thing rolling.”

A statement from Jets GM John Idzik said the same.

“Rex and I have worked well since I got here and have the same vision for this football team. As I have stated before, he is a phenomenal teacher and motivator. We are fortunate to have him as our head coach. The front office, coaches, players, this entire organization – we’re all in this together. We are all governed by the same motives and that is to build a perennial winner here with the Jets.”

RB Goodson arraigned, pleads not guilty on weapons, drug charges

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

Jets RB Mike Goodson, who was arrested in May of last year for marijuana and weapons  possession after police found him and a friend stopped in the middle of a New Jersey highway with drugs and a loaded 45 caliber pistol with hollow point bullets, pled not guilty to all charges.

Jets RB Mike Goodson's future is very cloudy due to pending criminal charges. (JetsInsider.com Photo)

Goodson was offered a plea deal to cop to 2nd degree possession of a weapon and serve one year in prison but he rejected the plea. He’s due back in court next month.

Goodson was signed last off-season as a compliment to Jets RB’s Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell but only played 2 games for Gang Green after he had to serve a 4 game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. When he returned in week 5 he only lasted 2 games after tearing an ACL in his knee.

Goodson’s future with the Jets and the NFL seems pretty dim at this point. The Jets did not provide any statements regarding Goodson following these developments.
