Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

Geno Smith knows he’ll have competition next season going into training camp as it’s very likely the Jets will bring in more talent at the QB position via free agency or the draft so he is wasting  no time trying to up his game.

Jets QB Geno Smith is working to improve his skills this off-season.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini is reporting that Smith has been spotted at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL working with former Heisman Trophy winner and current QB guru Chris Wienke in an attempt to elevate his throwing mechanics and skills.

Smith worked with Weinke last season prior to the scouting combine when some had him projected as the top pick in the draft.

Jets hire LSU’s McGaughey as special teams coordinator

Thursday, February 6th, 2014

FLORHAM PARK, NJ – Rex Ryan filled his final coaching vacancy on Wednesday by naming LSU special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey to the same position with the Jets. McGaughey replaces Ben Kotwica who left the team to join the Washington Redskins’ staff  last month.

The Jets went outside the NFL to hire new special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey from LSU.

McGaughey had been with LSU since 2011 where his special teams were one of the top units in the NCAA. Prior to joining LSU, he spent time as an NFL assistant with the Chiefs, Broncos and Giants where he was on Tom Coughlan’s Superbowl staff in 2007.

Rumors had been floating that the team was interested in luring former Jets special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff out of retirement, but those rumors were quickly squashed by Westhoff who publicly stated he had no interest in coming back into the NFL.

Voted on by select Associated Press writers, Richardson beat out Bills rookie LB Kiko Alonzo by four votes. Saints S Kenny Vaccaro, Cardinals S Tyrann Mattheiu and Panther DT Star Loutulelei also got votes.

Richardson made an immediate impact on the NFL as an immediate starter on a line that blossomed into one of the best in the NFL in 2013. He finished the year with 77 tackles and 3.5 sacks and was one of the defensive linemen against the run.

Drafted in the first round of last year’s draft (#13 overall) out of Missouri, Richardson was selected with the pick acquired from the Bucs in the Darrelle Revis trade.

Blessed with a brash outspoken personality, Richardson quickly became a fan and locker room favorite this past season.
