Richardson wins DROY
NEW YORK, NY – After being snubbed for the Pro Bowl this past week, Jets DE Sheldon Richardson got a little bit of redemption today by winning the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award. The award was announced as part of the NFL Honors Awards Show that takes place tonight in Manhattan.
Voted on by select Associated Press writers, Richardson beat out Bills rookie LB Kiko Alonzo by four votes. Saints S Kenny Vaccaro, Cardinals S Tyrann Mattheiu and Panther DT Star Loutulelei also got votes.
Richardson made an immediate impact on the NFL as an immediate starter on a line that blossomed into one of the best in the NFL in 2013. He finished the year with 77 tackles and 3.5 sacks and was one of the defensive linemen against the run.
Drafted in the first round of last year’s draft (#13 overall) out of Missouri, Richardson was selected with the pick acquired from the Bucs in the Darrelle Revis trade.
Blessed with a brash outspoken personality, Richardson quickly became a fan and locker room favorite this past season.
