Jets sign Vick, dump Sanchez
FLORHAM PARK, NJ – Ending weeks of speculation and debate, the Jets finally clarified and secured the team’s QB situation by signing veteran QB Michael Vick and releasing 5 year veteran Mark Sanchez.
Vick, who had been rumored to be on the Jets wish list since last season ended, signed a reported 1 year $5MM deal. The team announced the deal early this evening on Twitter.
After 5 up and down seasons, the last three on the downside with deteriorating stats and a season-ending injury last year, Sanchez is now a free agent. The team had to make a decision on Sanchez’s future by next Tuesday or pay him a $2MM roster bonus. His cap number this season was an enormous $13.MM. His release adds over $8MM to this years cap space.
With the signing of Vick, he reunites with his former offensive coordinator in Philadephia, Marty Mornhinweg. Vick will compete with 2nd year QB Geno Smith for the starting job and with a similar skill set, the Jets hope he can be a mentor to the still raw Smith. Even if Smith wins the starting job, the Jets now have a viable veteran on the bench if Smith falters. Something they have not had since Ryan became head coach.
