Blair was voted by fans as the team's biggest worst first-round pick ever and is now in a tourney of the biggest busts. He's seeded fourth and is going up against Cedric Jones from the Giants in the first round. Vote him up!!

This is so unfair. Bruce Coslet should be more of the "bust" than Blair Thomas. Blair Thomas was on the road to being an excellent RB. He had a few 100 yard games and then on MNF he fumbled and Bruce Coslet criticized him to no end. Began to rotate the B+RBs and Thomas was never the same. Say what you want but Blair Thomas was a nice kid that got "rail-roaded" by his AWFUL head coach. You want a REAL bust, try the numerous other choices on the JET lst like: Johnny Mitchell who was a dog and never lived up to his abilitly. How about having the number 1 pick overall and trading it for James Farrior and Scott Frost? What about Mike Haight, Dave Caddigan, Johnny Lam Jones, the list can go on forever.
Blair THomas was not as successful as JETS fans wanted but there were other variables that affect his career like his HC Bruce Coslet..........
+1 Cop...No way was BT the biggest Jet bust..

Thanks Savage. All the Jet-bashers love to put Blair Thomas at the top of the list. The reality is that the JETS were so bad from top to bottom during those years and there HC was as bad as Kotite except that he was just a miserable person as well. I had the opportunity to meet Blair Thomas and he was kind and considerate. He signed autographs and was personalbe. He was on the right track to being a very good RB and Bruce Coslet crushed his confidence early in his career. The kid was never the same........
He avg 5 ypc on 123 carries and 620 tds as a rookie..I agree Coslet killed him..

I dont blame the JETS for passing on Marino. It was just "one of those things". Marino was busted as a pot smoker his senior year and was not the top QB before the arrest. Ken O'Brien was a very good QB and if he had a decent line infront of him might have brought us to a SB appearnce.
The line about Marino was that he would snort the 50 yard line if you let him.
He had a great junior season and dropped in his senior year.
That's why everyone passed on him, not only the Jets. No one seems to remember that KC took Todd Blackledge at #7 and the Pats took Tony Eason at #25 that year over Marino.
Miami was coming off a SB appearance and could afford to take a chance on him, not hard to understand what happened with that draft.

O'Brien was better than Blackledge and Eason. Pats and KC could have taken Marino or O'Brien.

Agreed. We were 10-1 in 85' but injuries caused us to lose 4 out of 5 games going into the playoffs. Then the famous Gastineau roughing the passer on 4th down penalty kept us from meeting Denver in the championship.
However, I didn't remember that Dan the man was a toker. Of course I was 11 or 12 when they were drafted .

Ron Dayne was a bigger bust than Cedric Jones. The Giants could have takes Shawn Alexander.
I saw an NFL.com list of the best first round selections by choice ever. The Jets blew it big time on 2 of them taking the same position only higher.
QB Marino - took O'Brien (although he was good and I liked him)
RB Emmett Smith - took Blair Thomas
Ed Reed - took Bryan Thomas.
Sapp - took Brady
Keyshawn & Alex Van Dyke - didn't Terrell Owens and Marvin Harrison come out of that draft in the later rounds.

All good points Savage. The argument I would make for drafting a "partying" Namath is that it was a different era. The 1980's and cocaine was the first examples of careers being ruined over drugs in sports. As much as Namath was a child of the 60s generation I still believe Namath's partying was considered "boys being boys" and probably "just" alcohol. PArtying type drugs and pro sports were not in the public eye when Namath played.
I thought Ken O'Brien was an excellent QB that walked into a much different situation than Marino in Miami. Ken O'Brien had no OLINE to protect him while Marino had the luxury of an excellent team surrounding him. While I will not argue that Marino had the much better career, it is no garentee that putting Marino behind the same OLINE that O'Brien played behind would have resulted in better results.
Marino had a quick release Kenny took a act of Congress to get rid of the ball and never learned how to throw it away..

Also it was the height of AFL vs NFL war in trying to get the most talent and biggest name talent. The AFL desperately wanted Namath to sign with the AFL, he was already a name and rock star that the AFL needed to sell the league.

Besides the drug rumors on Marino which turned out to be false, It was Joe Waltons decision to take O'Brien over Marino. Walton felt Marino wasn't smart enough to run his complicated offense.
Although O'Brien had a couple of good years, he was nothing but a living statue in the pocket.
If Walt Micheals would have remained the HC in 83, no way they pass on Marino.

this is very true... i vividly remember sitting on my couch when i was a kid laughing when the "guy who threw the ball fell"..... little did i know at that tender age that a quarterback with a good o-line should not be on his back or running for his life on every down.... such was the case with that team back then....

Roger Vick was an awful pick on many levels. Here are two:
- Fullback in the first round.
- I think he set a record for the lowest intelligence score that year for first rounders.

Your last sentence is one of the MANY reasons Blair Bust Thomas is the biggest Jets bust of all time. Kyle Brady at least had a career in the NFL beyond his rookie contract. Thomas is worse than Lam Jones because of exactly what you said. He had no red flags. It's all on HIM and not the Jets. Lam Jones was a track star (first and foremost) that the Jets were hoping to pair with Wesley. Thomas takes priority over all them including Roger Vick because Blair Bust Thomas was the SECOND pick in the country and was football player from a school with a pedigree. Lam Jones was not truly a football player.
