View Full Version : OT: TIVO
I was thinking about getting a TIVO for my wife but know nothing about them other than what they do. Do you have to subscribe for the service or is it just like a VCR? Also, can they hook up to dish or cable? What should I expect to pay for one of these things?

I've had my TIVO for about 2 years now. It is quite possibly the best money I have ever spent.
There is a subscription, I think it was $20 a month, or a one time fee of $250.
TIVO is through DirecTV, but many cable companies are offering some sort of digital recorder now.
I hope that helps a bit.

$20 a month eh? Well sucks to a TIVO then.

I actually bellieve the subsription is only a few dollars a month. My wife pays the bills, so I don't know the dollar amount. It is well worth it. You can only get it through Direct TV though. I highly reccomend it. I have a 1 year old now, so I only got to watch football last season after midnight on Sundays.

Do you have cable or Direct TV?
Cable is $250 and subscription of $20 per month.
Direct TV is $149 at most stores, and every other week $50 rebate at circuit city with two line reciever i pay and additional $5.95 (I think, like having an extra box).
It will change the way you watch TV. I don't watch anything other than sports in prime time, I Tivo it and watch it later or the next day (no commercials with the fast forward saves me 10 minutes per 30 minute show)....It is awsome. :)

I have replay TV which is the same idea as Tivo, (like Coke and Pepsi) Anyway, you can Tivo with cable or Satelite, however the sub fee is higher if it is for cable. If you have Directv go Tivo without a doubt you and her will love it. IF you have Cable you may want to think about going Replay TV, my monthly fee is $9, or of course you could pay I think $250 straight up for life of the box.

Replay TV Shop (http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/shop/_templates/cat_listRTV.asp?cat=51&c=true&sssdmh=dm12.76114&Promocode=Promo20)
check out this link for Replay TV
I just hopped on the Replay Tv myself about two weeks ago for the price mostly but the features are the same basically, I paid 129 at Brandsmart but that link has new 40 hour units for 119, the Tivo will be 200 with a 50 mail in rebate
whatever you do pay the 12 monthly fee not the 250, the 250 is only for that particular box, if it breaks next month you lose the money and have to pay all over again
let me say this though, it is def the best piece of a/v equipment I ever invested in, you will love it

TIVO subscription is $12 per month. Here is the Cliff's Notes:
If you are good with PCs (hardware) there are many hacks for it. In that case buy a 40 hour TIVO and you can add a second hard drive in later.
If that is something that you are not comfortable with then buy an 80 hour TIVO.
Do you have a High Def TV? If so the basic TIVO will not record in HD. Someone else here can probably shed more light on howwhen you can get a HD TIVO. I bought a regular TIVO and I just got a 42" HD Plasma. I will say it does suck having to watch shows that were broadcast in HD on TIVO.
Regardless this is a must buy. Never watching commercials again. You will wonder how you ever put up with them.

I know we've had this conversation before on here but I must say again that TiVo is one of the greatest things I've ever purchased. I've had it for over 2 years and would never give it up.
Husker I sent you a PM with some info regarding TiVo.
As for HD TiVo, they have created a box and it should be released this year.

Got this from TiVo's website.
DIRECTV Brings Advanced HD DVR to Market in Early 2004
The highly anticipated new DIRECTV HD DVR, a high definition digital video recorder, was among the products TiVo showcased at CES. The DIRECTV HD DVR, licensed and designed by TiVo, features four tuners and can automatically identify whether an incoming signal is satellite or off-air and then engage the proper tuner for recording. The new DIRECTV HD DVR will be available in the first quarter of 2004.
The popular DIRECTV DVR with TiVo will continue to be a best seller for the leading satellite television service provider. Hughes, Philips, RCA and Samsung will all offer the integrated DIRECTV tuner with TiVo at retail outlets nationally in 2004.

I have Time Warner cable in NYC, they gave us a new cablebox which comes with an 80 gig harddrive, acts just like a Tivo, did not involve any sort of setup or anything. It's easy as pie.
I'd check w/ your cable provider to see if they have anything similar.

Comcast has something similar for $9 per month. But it is a 30 gig drive. And since you don't own the box you can't hack it. I realize the hacking may not be important to most people but it is big on my list.

Cable or dish? I really only know cable but what I did for my cable is hook up two video inputs...Video 1 = TIVO, Video 2 (Through the VCR) lets me watch while taping.

they say you can pop open a tivo and add a hard drive which can expand your memory time to upwards of 100 hours, that same hard drive can then be removed and linked to your pc and you can then burn the program to a DVD, there is a book on amazon which is called 101 tricks for your Tivo or something like that

I would assume so but I don't know that much about Replay. There are probably millions of sites about it though. I know there are tons for TIVO. TIVO runs on Linux so people write programs for it all the time.

So far I have done the following to my TIVO:
-Put in another hard drive which gives me more recording time.
-Put in an ethernet connection.
-Installed a telnet program on it which allows me to copy programs to it from my computer.
-Installed a program that allows my caller id (phone) to pop up on my tv everytime the phone rings.
There are tons of programs that you can install though. I am not a programmer but luckily everyone else in the world seems to be one. So I simply take their freeware!

Cable box. Can't do it with a cable box.
I have cable and I can TIVO and watch TV at the same time. I split the connection...one to the VCR then to the TIVO and the second to the TV. TIVO always pops up...need to change to channel 4 at 8pm. At that time I let it change and I switch over to Video 2. TIVO records on Video 1.
I just got Digital Cable but have not hooked my TIVO up to it. I got a plasma tv and I am afraid of my kids pausing tivo and having burn in on my screen. So I have to move my TIVO. The TV I am moving it to also has a Digital Cable Box.
There has to be a way to do it even with digital cable, I can't see why it wouldn't work. If you want after I set it up again I can let you know how I made out. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Mean Bro Green

depends on what you want to do
let me start by saying that tivo/replaytv is teh best invention of the past 20 years technology wise
if you have satelite then you may want to get the dircttv one, if not get a standalone, if you want to get freaky get the HDTV one for about 500 otherwise even if you have an HD TV it will record in standard format, also be concerned about Hard Drive size, the 40 hour tivo is really about a 20 tivo if recorded in high quality which is pretty much what you will want to do, if you get a stand alone you can upgrade the hard drive yourself
but whatever you do, YOU MUST GET ONE you will not regret it
also the fee is about 13 a month and DO NOT pay the one time fee of 250 it is a ripoff, because it is for the life of that box so if the box breaks in 6 months you will not get your money back or be able to transfer that to another box

If you already have DirecTV, you can get the TIVO box for around $100, and they will install it free. Plus they will divide the cost into monthly payments. It is a must have. Like Mean Bro said, it is the best invention technology wise in the last 20 years, and if you are a sports junkie you have no choice but to get one. I don't know how else to describe it other than amazing. It has changed the way I watch TV.

they are linked the tivo wont work if you are not paying for directtv service, so in that case you should get a standalone unit taht you can bring with you when you move, aside from taht the NFL package may be available on cable next year, so do not invest in direct tv if you can help it

Tivo through directv is much cheaper than the stand alone unit (5.99 vs 12.95), but it is series 1 Tivo and doesn't have all the features that series 2 has. If you are just looking to record tv shows, save the cash and get the direct tv unit. While I miss a couple of the features since switching, the money saved is worth it.

A land-based phone line is REQUIRED for the activation and full functionality of the DIRECTV® DVR with TiVo® service. The phone line is required for only a few minutes each day for DVR service downloads (normally performed after midnight).

I've had Tivo thru DirecTv for about a year or so....it really is the best thing ever invented. you won't watch TV the same way ever again.
I recommend the DTV w/tivo over the stand alone mainly for the fact you can record 2 shows at the same time and/or, watch one show while recording another.
Also with DTV all the channels are digital and record that way....the signal does not need to be converted from analog first so the quality is better.
It is cheaper also than the stand alones...4.99/month compared to 12.99.
And technically all DTV/Tivo's are Series 2 not series 1. new software updates come out all the time and its only a matter of time. The only thing the DTV's don't have is the Home Media Option, but most believe that its a matter of time before it does. All of the machines sold now have USB ports to be used later, most likely for networking purposes.
You don't need a phone line to use DTV/tivo, but its helpful to have if you want the software to update, or order pay per view (but u can do that online.)

Sweet hookup MBG. I love the picture on my new tv. I am gonna order the DiretTV HD Package (Maybe with HD TIVO) and it will be sweet!
I am waiting for the contractors to finsih the new siding and roof.

did you get all monster cables???
all i can say is taht the pic looks awesome with it, have no idea honestly how it would look without them but i got all monsters and the monster surge protecter that filters all the interference and stuff too, it cost 300 but its worth it as well
also have the PS2 connected with monster S video and that also looks ridiculous
i feel like i'm in a theatre when i watch it with my new 1000 watt stereo too, my system is exactly as i wanted since forever, i'm a lucky guy :D , nothing like enjoying a nice movie or sporting event in that atmosphere

You need a HDTV to use the HD Directtivo right?

A land-based phone line is REQUIRED for the activation and full functionality of the DIRECTV® DVR with TiVo® service. The phone line is required for only a few minutes each day for DVR service downloads (normally performed after midnight).
Thats what I got from the directtv site. I dont have a land based phone line so what should I do? Do you need a land based phone line for all of the tivo models?
Vinny:
I have my TIVO on the home network. The Series 2 TIVO's don't have an ethernet connection built in but they do have a USB Port. You probably have a router from all of your Madden gaming.
So you can get a USB Wireless or Regular Ethernet Adapter. TIVO recognizes the Adapter and then uses the web to download all new program content.

Yeah VInny the HD TIVO records content in HD but is much more expensive because of the larger drive and because it has to interpret HD.
If you don't have a HD TV don't sweat it. Personally the HD TIVO would be great but I am waiting for the price to come down first.
It does suck watching something in normal mode when you knew it was broadcast in HD though.

Havent gone to buy any monster cables yet. I have to get the following
1) A Set of Monster Cables (Composite cables green, blue red I think)
2) A Monster surge supressor (voltage regulator/filter)
I can't play ps 2 on this tv because wifey would flip...instead i keep the ps2 on my sweet tube tv in the game room in the basement with the broadband to shut fools up online!

Vinny, yeah you have to ahve HDTV to get HD Tivo

If I get Directtv version it will be cheaper, but if they arent going to carry the NFL ticket, I will be cancelling it. Does anyone know if DirectTV is carrying the NFL ticket for years to come?

Yeah, they just signed a monster exclusive contract with the NFL for at least the next 5 years.

for those that care i just got Comcast HD-DVR installed and what a shock it actually does all the things i want it to do!!!
the key feature has gotta be the duel tuner - i can record something on one channel and watch something on another channel - alternatively i can record 2 shows at the same time (but cannot watch a third). This was key when there were a bunch of bowl games going on.
10 dollars a month, no equipment to buy, no phonelines or internet needed - ya can't beat that with a bat.

Bit:
This is a HD DVR? I didn't know they had them and I saw a commercial last night for Comcast saying the same thing.
How big is the drive? Or how many hours of HD content do they tell you that you can get?
I would just sell my hacked tivo on ebay and go with that. I have the series 2 tivo and can't record in HD right now.

it says clearly in the manual you can record in HD but i do not have an HDTV so have yet to try that out -
as for disk size, if there is any drawbacks this is it - there are only about 30 hours of space so you have to backoff or delete regularly - the other drawback to the unit is that is while it does have all these crazy outputs, including RCA's and USB on the unit front face but these ports are "inactive - for future use" at this time - that was sucky - also there is supposed to be picture in picture for the dual tuner but my remote didn't come with those buttons - probably inactive feature - but it has room to grow which is a good thing - it even looks like there is room to throw another Hard Drive in there but i wouldn't have the first notion as to how to hack it
as for lack of direct ticket im sorry but im not going to give those crooks money just cause they have a monopoly with NFL - for the same reason i don't shop at walMart i can't support that bull**** either... it's unamerican

Thanks for the info Bit. The original Comcast DVR had a 20 gig drive I believe. That would be entirely too small to record HD content. Also hacking it probably wouldn't be an option because you don't own the box.
It sounds promising though. I am not ready to switch yet but maybe someday.
At any rate good luck with it. You will never watch another commercial again!

You can't get rid of commercials.

You can't get rid of them all together. The simplest way it to hit FF 3 times. When you hit play it automatically rewinds 8 seconds. So once you see the commercial is over you hit play and are usually pretty close.
There is a hack that lets you change a button to a 30 second skip.

If you're talking about hacked cards where you get everything for free, I don't believe there is really anything readily available that works.
