Ummm...they don't use salt where I live and we get around just fine. It's called "learning to drive in the winter"...something people living in large cities can't seem to handle. They seem to think that you can drive the same way in the snow as you would in July...jackrabbit starts at every light, weaving in and out of lanes to save yourself 15 seconds on a commute, putting idiotic low profile tires on an SUV because it looks cool. Hell, there are 10% as many 4wd vehicles here in WNY than I saw down in Westchester. I see 80 year old people driving in a lake effect blizzard in Chevy Impalas.

I was next to this dumbass lady once who was spinning all around in her Jeep a few winters ago down in Dutchess county. The idiot didn't realize that she had to hit the button on her dash to go to 4wd. Dee-dee-dee.

WRONG (again) Plumber...I took a car from Portland, OR to West Salem, OR yesterday..visiting the wife's fam for CHRISTMAS..& we saw first hand the results of using chemical de-icers that are supposedly enviro-friendly. That's the genesis of this thread..salt works, otherwise innocent people die- & your typically simplistic answer referring to how people drive being the cause of these accidents is wrong....again.

Buy snow tires. You'll do just fine with snow on the road.

I witness people driving without it first hand too. I spend 5 months out of the year driving in the snow, no salt and do just fine.

Living in the snowiest metro area in the country, I will take snow-packed roads over the slushy brown sh!t any day, Snow-packed roads provide pretty good traction.

FYI we have private & public buses here in NJ so yes I can imagine 3 different buses picking up passengers. It's actually quite orderly and causes no problems at all

The rain here in Vermont made side roads treacherous today. Driving down an unsalted road that had turned into a sheet of ice, I recalled what a moronic response this was.

Hey! Guess what?! We got rain here too and some side roads were sheets of ice and we didn't use salt and I STILL didn't go flying off the road. Know how? I drove slower, didn't brake, accelerate or change direction suddenly. It's a trick my Dad taught me when I was first learning to drive. It's called...driving in the winter while living in an area of the country that gets a lot of snow and doesn't have enough money in town funds to purchase $30/ton for calcium chloride to cover the roads with and instead have to learn and adapt.

This video was shot in Portland Oregon. Salt can't save how utterly bad these drivers are. You could be driving on a road made out of salt, covered with salt while it's raining salt and these people would still figure out how to crash...

i'd like to see u driving slow like your daddy taught u on that road bubba....you'd be in the same world of sh*t they were. Thankfully i'm back in NYC as of this morning, but last week in Portland, unsalted highways looked like mine fields, & it wasnt the way people drived that caused it. It was pacific northwest tree huggers.

You say unsalted roads are like minefields. WE DON'T USE ANY, NADA, ZILCH, ZERO SALT ON OUR ROADS. None. No salt whatsoever...how do we do it?
