Italy has a tremendously long way to go in just under a year. Lippi needs to revamp the whole squad, and perhaps say goodbye to some old warriors (I'm looking at you, Cannavarro).
This tournament will hopefully serve as a wakeup call and start the process of rebuilding in Italy.

you know as well as anyone that Italy traditionally has an "older" team than most, but it's almost as though Lippi has forgotten to mix things up a bit. there's been no signs of transition, of bringing the young guys in, and their paying the price now.
the defense, which should be Italy's main strength, is an embarrassment. Cannavaro is a shell of his former self, and the back line just doesn't look or play like an Italian defense should.
i wouldn't want to be in Lippi's shoes right now -- the dude has to really mix things up, but at the same time, does he dare to do so this far into qualifying? tough...
