JAZZ-HEAD THREAD

Atleast this thread is worthy.

Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Grant Green.. just to name a few. Who loves the jazz?

Ray Brown is arguably the GREATEST session stand up player as ranked by his peers.

Love Monk Davis Coltrane Parker.....

I also listen to Ricie Cole, Dexter Gordon, Dr Billy Taylor.

To Me (close minded) jazz MUST have an upright bass player or it is fusion/funk but NOT jazz.

This is Freddie Hubbard, playing one of my favorite pieces. He played the horn on Zanzibar for Billy Joel.

He's one of my all time favorites.

I have a few CD's, one live from Concord wit Ernestine Anderson on vocals. Outstanding.

Some great stuff already posted. Agree 100% on Ray Brown... I've been lucky enough to see him play live with Peterson (and Herb Ellis!).

No love for yet for Mingus... so here's some.

(that's Booker Ervin killin it on the tenor sax)

And I'll never pass on a chance to pimp my buddy Kevin's work. Here he is with Cuban percussionist Cyro Baptista performing something rare these days... truly original music.

I studied BASS in the early 80's (group stuff) with Jamil Nasser in NYC, a personal friend of Mingus. He told us incredible Mingus stories and described him as by far the most talented technical bass player who ever lived.

A lot fo great tyou tubes in the thread so far.

Here's a good one - the main part of this jazz tune is using a minor chord with a Major 7. The sound is distinctive in a subtle way.

HUGE fan of jazz...I love it all. Part of what I love about it is that there's tons of stuff available and it's mostly great. I have quite a collection of jazz but am always finding new material.

This is one of my favorite versions of "Autumn Leaves" from "Somethin' Else" (Cannonball Adderley featuring Miles). 10 minutes long and it starts out so dark and haunting, like it's creeping along in the dark until the main theme comes in with Miles and then Cannonball rips it a new one:

Watching Treme on HBO this year turned me on to New Orleans Jazz.

Kermit Ruffins version of Skokiaan is amazing.

Love Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrel was posted above , he is a beast too.

Ever hear George Benson do REAL jazz. We think of Benson as sort of modern but he also is an outstanding "kool" jazz player.

If anyone is interested in hearing a great jazz guitarist, please check out Pat Martino. He is a great improvisational musician.
