Conservative Majority for Canada
 

Since it is a politics forum, and the election was yesterday......

Interesting - have a few questions - how much has the commodities boom affected your country? Has it affected the Canadian $? What % of GDP is mining? What about your fiscal balance nationally?

BTW - does a conservative majority in Canada = raving communists for your southern neighbours?

You're only allowed one intelligent question in the politics forum. Intelligent answers can only be allowed if they include a derrogatory term about either political party, just to make sure they're not over anybody's head. ;)

ahh, well - I guess I've used up my quota then for a while. :)

Top Federal tax bracket 29%. Corporate tax rates down this year from 18 to 16.5%.

On Cap gains they have an interesting formula. Half the gain is taxed at your regular income tax rate. Lower then the US but somewhat progressive although they only have 3 rates and the middle rate is only 3% less then the top rate.

Canada didn't have the banking crisis and they are doing well because of their commodity driven market. Unemployement is not great but much better then the US at about 7.7%.

The Canadian Dollar has gone from just under .96 to the US dollar to just over 1.05 in about a year.

None of this matters. They have universal health care. They'll all be dead in a year... :P

They have 20 people who freeze their ass off and have one of the largest oil, gas and mineral reserves in the world. They can afford Universal Health Care, they are rich beyond our wildest dreams and when people from NY and Michigan come over in the summer to mow their lawns they don't put their kids in their public schools.

The Tories rode down the centre* of Canadian politics, promising more of the same if elected -- the same health care, the same muddled corporate policies, the same ad hoc interventions in economic and social programs that played to a range of existing political camps.

Conservatives in Canada won't touch their health care system because Canadians LOVE IT. In 2004 Tommy Douglas, "the father" of the Canadian single-payer system was voted the Greatest Canadian of all time. He beat out the likes of Terry Fox, Pierre Trudeau, and Wayne Gretzky.
