Darrelle Revis rumor speaks to Jets’ dire situation
 

The New York Jets are toying with the notion of trading cornerback Darrelle Revis. If that move comes to fruition, it probably will be safe to cross the Jets off as any sort of threat in 2013 — and to preemptively add Rex Ryan to the list of coaches fired after next season.

The Jets are in a world of financial hurt: They already sit an estimated $19 million over next season’s cap, and Revis, who is entering the final year of his contract, no doubt will want a lucrative deal.

So, from that standpoint, trying to find some value for Revis now before he has the chance to bolt in free agency makes sense — even when you consider, as La Canfora pointed out, that trading Revis would cost the Jets an extra $3 million this year, bumping his 2013 cap hit up to $9 million.

But the fact that the Jets would even consider dealing their best player hints toward plans for a total overhaul.

That possibility should not come as a total surprise to anyone, either, given the Jets’ 8-8 mark in 2011 and 6-10 finish this season. It does not speak highly of Ryan’s chances to hold onto his job for more than a few more months.

The Jets canned GM Mike Tannenbaum after the team’s disappointing 2012 finish, leaving Ryan (and quarterback Mark Sanchez) as the lightning rod. Though Ryan spoke at a January press conference of starting from scratch and approaching 2013 like his first on the job, time clearly is running out on the Jets’ boisterous coach.

Owner Woody Johnson might even have kept Ryan around because Johnson knew how fruitless a coaching search might have been. The Jets had trouble enough convincing anyone to be their new GM, finally settling on John Idzik.

What coach — and especially a first-time coach — would want to put himself in charge of a flailing, cap-strapped team?

So, Ryan “earned” another year to get the Jets back on track. It was hard to feel all that great about his chances before La Canfora’s report, and now the 2013 Jets season already has the specter of a lost cause.

The 2014 draft, by the way, could include the likes of DE Jadeveon Clowney, and QBs Teddy Bridgewater and Johnny Manziel — the type of stars that this year’s draft class appears to be lacking. If the Jets were to go full-bore on a rebuilding plan and, as a result, just happen to tank next season, they may find a franchise player or two available.

For whatever it is worth, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport countered La Canfora’s news by offering on Twitter that “Revis doesn’t want (a trade). Wants to be a Jet his whole career.” In theory, Revis’ desire to stick around would help the Jets sign him to an extension, but at the moment, they may not be able to swing it financially.

The toughest part of trading Revis now (aside from sending your best player packing) would be trying to get fair value for him. Revis played just two games in 2012 due to a knee injury, a fact other GMs would no doubt use against the Jets in trade conversations.

No matter how you slice this, it is difficult to find a real positive outcome for the Jets at the present time. Either they keep Revis for one last season or deal him and throw in the towel on 2013.

The ideal New York scenario — re-signing Revis long-term and bouncing back with a strong 2013 season — is a bigger and bigger reach the deeper the Jets dive into their salary cap problems.

If Johnson decides he has no play but to unload Revis, that call would all but seal the Jets’ fate — and that of Rex Ryan — for next year.

Revis said in a Tweet "I'm speechless by far but more importantly I feel more upset for the jet nation for having to go through this!!!"

I don't see it as dire. I just see it as necessary due diligence. Remember Hershel Walker? Not that I think he will bring back near the kings ransome Walker did. I think If I were the new GM I would rule nothing out. I say if we can somehow get a franchize QB, and a few picks for Revis. Sighn me up. I would not get rid of him just because of $$$ or contract though.

I'm sorry Darrelle but I don't believe for a second you're worried about us Jet fans, you're worried about your bank account as usual...

This article (wherever it's from) is a joke... just an excuse to bash the team.

The writer starts out saying they need to trade him because the Jets are in cap hell, and then admits that trading Revis will add $3mil to their 2013 cap.

Then the writer claims that trading Revis would be a sign that the Jets are going to be overhauling their entire roster and coaching staff and will be giving up on 2013 in the process.

What about including some relevant facts? Such as...

1) Revis has one more year on his deal, and if the Jets don't want to pay a CB $15mil+ a year, and want to get some value back from him, the time to trade him is now.

2) The pass defense played fine last year without him. If anything, it's proved having him is a luxury. How many games did we lose in 2012 that we would've won with Revis? Trading him is hardly giving up on the season.


If the Giants were in a similar situation, the media would be writing articles about how paying CBs top dollar isn't worth it, and how smart the Giants were being to make sure that they didn't let Revis walk next year for nothing. .. but since it's the Jets :rolleyes:

The Chiefs got a 1st and 2 3rds for Jared Allen a DE when he was 25.. Your looking for a franchise QB plus a couple of picks?? :eek:

I'd hope for a 1 and a conditional the year after.

If he leaves as a FA, Jets should get a lat3 3.

I would hope the Jets would get a first round draft pick for him; in addition, the wouldn't have to pay his large salary. So another first rounder plus the 9th and 39 picks would mean we could get 3 very good players with a little luck at low cap hits. Revis hardly played this year and we were in it until Dec. I think we have to let him go.

They haven't even discussed it...

And generally speaking, you just never trade hall of famers.

Before the cap rule I agree.. Now it's can you afford them without weaking to many other positions..

sometimes you add by subtracting. much as revis is the best cornerback in the nfl it's only one position and it's a one on one position. he isn't double teamed to free up a blitzer and even though he does cover. it all depends what the jets can get for him. even girlie boy brady would be traded if kraft could get enough for him.

John, I think a proven Pass Rusher is higher on any value chart than a proven Shut-Down corner; and it's usually that way.

revis will retire a jet. he will agree to a cap friendly deal that will extend his contract and remain a jet. as mentioned you dont trade hall of fame players.

Yeah cause Revis is all about the cap friendliness.

I am all for trading Revis. I think we have to. This is the unfortunate reality in the Salary Cap Era.

What scares me is the fact that this is a trade the franchise cant screw up. We need to get value back. This means not only getting picks but also choosing the right players with these picks. I wish I could say I have confidence that they wont screw it up, but after what I heard today and what little I know about the new GM, im just not that confident.
