Hunter says he has put 2011 behind him. He’s hoping the fans can do the same.
“I don’t think the fans will ever forget,” Hunter said. “I’m hoping they’ll eventually hop on the bandwagon. There’s no sense dwelling on the past. If they’re dwelling on the past, then they’re the ones with the problems.”
If he's saying: "If after I prove this season that I am a much improved player, and the fans continue to focus on 2011, then the fans have the problem, not me.
Then I would agree with you.
But a lot of us don't get that from what he said.
It sounds as if he's saying the fans have no right NOW to dwell on 2011.
Well we do until proven otherwise.
"Dwelling on the past" does not simply mean being aware of it -- it implies not being able to let it go, and letting it affect your mindset going forward. He said he's "hoping people get on the bandwagon" -- I'm pretty sure that means he expects to do well, but is afraid some fans just won't let go of what they saw (or at least think they saw) last year.
In the end, it doesn't matter what he meant. I believe there ARE fans who will always look down on him, regardless of what he does going forward. And as fans, they have that right. But I also don't see the benefit in him worrying about them. He's much better off focusing on the fan who simply wants to see him do well, and is willing to root for him to do so . . .
