The wealth and power in America has always been generated by our industrial prowess and innovative spirit. It helped to have the only country in the world that espoused free market capitalism. The money and power even in early US history was based in the North. Slavery in North America was addressed and defeated as early in our history as was possible. They tried to outlaw it during the Continental Congress and it was clear that if the issue was pushed the South would defect and there would have been no revolution. It took the 85 or so years for the Federal Government and Union as a whole to strengthen to the point where Slavery could be addressed.
