Except that one is Irish Whiskey and is Scotch. So despite your novice palatte, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to tell the difference.
But to address your question, why spend money on anything? Is there any reason to spend money on good food? Wine? Clothes?
Everyone has different tastes. I drink Makers and Buffalo Trace all the time. Occasionally I'll have a drink of that 15/20 year Van Winkle that's a bit pricier. Is it it really 3-4x better than my usual pour? Probably not, but it depends on how you quantify things. To some people, eating at a fancy restaurant is extremely wasteful. To others its well worth it.
Some people think going to 8 Jet games is excessive - others wouldn't miss a game for even a cousin's wedding.
