Tannenbaum was already wedded to the Sanchez acquisition and was going to be judged by that decision above all else. The last reasonable way out for him was closed when Peyton Manning wanted nothing to do with the Jets. At that point and by extending Sanchez he effected a back door way to try and get another year for himself by locking in Mark to "uncuttable" money.
Nice try from a sneaky bastard. The only problem is that he never expected Sanchez to be quite this putrid.
