A Silver Lining for Jets Fans?
"Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing...after they have exhausted all other possibilities."-Winston Churchill
The historical quote can be debated as it relates to America but it applies strongly to Woody Johnson. Unfortunately Johnson is not at the point where he has exhausted all other possibilities because he is keeping the coach. Many Jets fans (not all, of course) feel that the owner has botched the off season by keeping the head coach and/or allowing him to help pick the next GM. Some experts, and fans, contend that by keeping the coach (and God knows what other preconditions as well), the owner has turned off solid, up and coming, qualified GM candidates.
So now the Jets will be forced to hire Scott Cohen who, much like the analogy of moving the deck chairs around on the Titanic, was here and part of the decision making process that led to the situation we are now in. Of course, fans will be sold more propaganda that he is the candidate of choice (as if the team would spend money to hire a firm to look for candidates if they believed Cohen was really that good). So what is the silver lining? How can we hope for Woody Johnson to do the right thing despite himself? Here is how;
Another Jets debacle of a season will force the owner, against his will, to fire the coach. Johnson pays attention when his bottom line is affected and he would know that failing to fire the coach after a horrific season would prompt a revolt from his fan base and the media. And since they are probably now going to have to promote a gm from within it would be easier to cut bait after this season when Johnson either hires a big name coach (who will pick his own GM) or a GM, who will then hire the next coach. The Jets will not have much money to sign players this off season as they continue to shed those ridiculous contracts. The lack of talent on the roster will probably lead to a very high draft pick in 2014, one which could boast two franchise QBs and a game changing, elite pass rusher.
The 2014 off season will be a watershed time for this franchise. The owner has already botched this off season but its the next one that will determine where this franchise will go for the next decade.
