He drafted good players around Manning. The team was built around a high scoring O. eg the D was smaller but fast to get after the QB when the Colts built a lead. They weren't built to stop the run, so when Manning went down, they were exposed due to the lack of an explosive O. And he had the foresight to do it before the NFL changed rules to accommodate that type of offense.
