To my friends 32G, JWs and Borgo. I have thought LONG and hard about why I am not in the camp of Entwhistle. He is great no doubt. Here is my conclusion.
What Entwhistle does, just my view, is much easier copied. He plays loud and powerful and always had to compete with Townsend. So... when I see rock bass players, they all go loud and in your face and it has become almost accepted.
The skill that I did not possess to my satisfaction and have only seen in a handful of players is the melodic ability to play a bass, keep it in the back ground and create a terrific stand alone melody. Victor Wooten always talks about how the bass should NOT be a forward instrument.
Any trained bass player could sight read Paul McCartney lines. It is NOT difficult to play. It is the creativity. This tune is one a many examples of a walking, melodic bass line that could easily be a horn. BTW..I am a fan. I have seen the WHO twice.
