Mingus has a habit of playing a bit dissonant at times and while Duke is in a league of his own, both as a player and composer, It sounds like those 3 said "fukk it" lets play some dissonant $hit that we like.
Its not a tune I would play for someone I am trying to introduce to jazz.
I would play something like this. I loved playing this in a jazz band in college.
