The Official Current Players Draft Thread

Ok, due to the fact that the opinion was split between the current players draft and the fantasy world cup, I have elected to to the current players draft this year, and the fantasy world cup next year. The rules are similar to last year, which are posted below:

Roster:
11 Starters, 6 Subs, 1 Manager

Starters:
Goal Keepers- Min 1, Max 1
Strikers - Min 2, Max 3
Midfielders - Min 3, Max 5
Defenders - Min 3, Max 5

Bench:
1 GK, 1 M, 1 ST, 1 D, and 2 discretionary Spots

Eligibility:

-All players must be on a club team (there is no constraint on division or playing time)

-Everyone must chose one player over 30, and one player under 23 (just to add some challenge)

-Midfielders/Defenders are eligible across their line, rather than just in their specific spot

-Strikers/Wingers are ONLY available as strikers/wingers, , midfielders are similarly ONLY available as midfielders (so no Lampard at striker, for instance), and defenders are naturally only available as defenders

-Manager - club or international, provided they are managing today

-Last, and probably the most important rule, YOU ARE DRAFTING THE MODERN VERSION OF A PLAYER. For example, if someone drafts David Beckham, they are drafting the 2009 David Beckham, not the 1999 David Beckham.

Time:

-Last year I proposed a six hour time window. However, this was rarely followed and I did not enforce it at all. This year, I am aware the impossibility of a time limit, and just asking everyone to submit their picks as soon as they can.

-Last year we had 9 GM's. I believe that we can have a great draft if we can get around 12 GM's this year. I'm unsure how I will determine the order this year, so just post if you are interested or not.

Thank you and good luck to all

Oooh, that's good.

Do we vote a winner at the end like last year, or do we just admit right away that Paulie sucks?

The winner is in.

Should I attempt to draft positions other than central/attacking midfielders and forwards or do the same as last time?

The hook for this is too good - this is going to be great fun, but realistically, I just don't have the time. Good luck to all participating.

True. My team was a mess last year. I still should have won though.

SBIII should join too, seeing as how he's a hardcore Chelsea fan airplane mechanic now.

As this will be my first time doing this, just wondered how the scoring works is it at the end of the season everyone just decides who had the best team or is there some kind of points system eg
if a striker scores 2 pts
3 pts midfielder
pts for GK keeping a clean sheet
minus points for red cards, GK letting a certain amount of goals
etc

we just voted last time...that being said though, thats a pretty good idea...have a vote in the offseason, then do scoring during the season to see who actually won

That would be pretty cool. Who would keep track of the scoring, though?

Hmm... that's a very good idea. My one concern is that people would draft players with their fantasy value in mind, rather than creating the best team.

That said, I would like to do that, and if we did we could use the ESPN scoring system which I have posted below:

All Players 1st XI Appearance 2
Sub Appearance 1
Key Contribution 2
Yellow Card -1
Red Card -3
Goalkeeper Clean Sheet 4
Goal Conceded -1
Goal 10
Defender Clean Sheet 3
Goal Conceded -1
Goal 8
Midfielder Clean Sheet 1
Goal 6
Striker Goal 4

As for the start date, how about one week from now?

If the week after is more convenient for other people as well it makes no difference for me. I'll wait.
