Preseason Injury Question
I have searched all over the internet but can't find an answer to this question.
If a non-guaranteed contract guy gets hurt for the year during training camp(Pitoitua is a prime example from last year), what kind of financial compensation does he get, if any? Is he SOL? I can't imagine that's the case, but weirder things happen with NFL contracts. |

Not sure how the new CBA reads, but I do believe that in the old CBA there was a pro-ration of salary depending on how deep into pre-season the injury occurred. I also believe that when a player makes the season opening roster his salary is guaranteed for the season.

If you get injured during camp you will normally end up on injured reserve. If you are a star player you end up with your full compensation for the year even though you never played a game. If you are a lower level player normally the contract has a provision for what they call a split salary. So the Jets had a rookie player injured in camp this year (Taylor Boggs) and they had to put him on injured reserve. He will earn 258K rather than 375K.
If there is a dispute over how injured the player really is there often ends up being a settlement to compensate the player. I think that is what happened when the Jets released O'Connell last year and he came back and said he had a season ending shoulder injury. The Jets ended up taking him back and reworking his deal to pay him a split salary while on IR rather than dealing with a settlement. |

This link has an interesting read on guaranteed contracts and the NFL. Some players do have injury guarantees, meaning the contract is not guaranteed if a healthy cut, but if they can no longer perform do to injury their contract is guaranteed. ( I believe D'Brick has that kind of contract.) |
