I heard it was a sprain and he would only be out 3-5 weeks.

Eric Smith injury update: Jets safety day-to-day with knee sprain

PUBLISHED Sunday, Aug 12, 2012 at 11:09 am EDT
Associated Press

CORTLAND, N.Y.—New York Jets safety Eric Smith is "day-to-day" with a sprained knee ligament, but Coach Rex Ryan doesn't anticipate signing a veteran at the position to offset Smith's absence.

Smith sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in Friday's preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. He also injured his hip, but tests showed no damage.

Smith is "stiff and sore" but feeling better, Ryan says Sunday. He is unsure how long Smith will be out but wouldn't rule out him returning during the preseason.

Ryan says wide receiver Santonio Holmes (ribs) is sidelined for practice, as is second-year receiver Jeremy Kerley (hamstring). Ryan says the team hopes Kerley will be able to practice for the first time in camp by the end of the week.

If that is the case, add this as another f-up on Tanny's resume by not resigning Jim Leonhard.

Agreed. Jets should break the rules and roster 300 players just in case of injuries.

Either way it looks like he's done as a Jet. That dude that comes looking for you in camp, "coach wants to see you and bring your playbook" will be knocking on his door soon, what a bummer.

I think the only reason he was still here was as a trading piece anyway. We brought in 4 S that look good and he just isn't a starter. For the 2 mil I never really saw him making it past week 4. Enter the age of Bell, Landry, Allen, and Bush. Bush was a FS anyway so it balances out. 2 vets 2 young prospect.

Why would they do that a guarantee his salary?

Makes no sense. Either keep him or cut him.

By the way, Smith is already painfully slow. This can only make it even worse when he comes back.

Leonhard isn't going to be a starter or big time bench player ever again. after 2 season ending injuries, he's done.

Smith isn't good either, so even if it was true that he's out for the season, I'm not worried about it. There's bigger issues on the defense then a special teams quality player not being on the defense.
