Get Jason Smith a Double Helmet!
http://users.stargate.net/~aestraus/procap.html
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2...to_lawren.html A few years ago, I remember watching a San Fran lineman playing with some sort of double helmet because of concussion issues. Essentially, it was a cap that went on top of his helmet. Best of all, it seemed to work and he played for a few more years. Definitely need to get one of those for Mr. Smith. |

either way Concussions are the least of jason smith's problems. His terribleness is not related to injuries. |

2) The reason that the brain rattles in the head is that the energy is transferred to the skull. If you can decrease the energy transferred to the skull, you can decrease the chances of a concussion. Indeed, that is why helmets are used in the first place. For a few guy particularly likely to suffer concussions, it is logical to increase the amount of padding by adding something like a ProCap. |

[QUOTE=Digetydog;4569941]1) You are correct. A better helmet won't protect Smith from being Hunter II. That is on him.

What do those helmets do? Decrease the force of blows to the head. Where do you get the idea that those helmets are useless? A source, or is it just based on your own knowledge of concussions? |

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/sp...caps-to/nRKtP/ Alot depends on the definition of concussion, a lineman might knock heads little hits 100 times a game and none of them diagnosed as a concussion. but it might cause later life problems regardless. there are brains in the brain bank from high schoolers with advanced CTE but never diagnosed officially with a single concussion. |

You can get concussions a number of ways. It's not just receiving a blow. If your head is spun around quickly enough, you can get one. It's not about impact whether it's brain hitting skull and rattling.... it's more about sudden deceleration...check the science. They used to think you had to have the brain slamming back and forth in the skull but it's even simpler than that.
When your brain suddenly decelerates, it causes brain cells to become "depolarized" and they start shooting off in random directions. Because it's random, your brain fills up with chemicals that will deaden memory receptors. Once you damage these receptors, you're likely to get more concussions. Your brain doesn't even need to rattle around. It just needs to accelerate and then stop suddenly.... spinning around, blows, etc.. all can cause a concussion. Those are the simplified facts. |

If you have a player on the OL who continues to suffer concussions using his current equipment, you have some choices: A) Keep doing what you are doing - we all know how that is likely to turn out; or B) Try using different equipment to change the outcome. That might be a ProCap or a different model/sized helmet. Either way, the only reason not to try is that you think that you will do more harm. |

Safety? I'm far more concerned with Sanchez's ability to see over that Sputnik head.
