NFL.com:New York Jets hotly pursued Matt Schaub in 2006

I remember some folks around here were dying for the Jets to get Schaub.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...headline_stack

How close we came to avoiding a circus in Florham Park.

When the New York Jets face Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub on Monday night, they'll come face to face with what could have been.

Ex-Jets coach Eric Mangini told Rich Cimini of ESPN New York the team went hard after Schaub in 2006, when he was a young backup quarterback with the Atlanta Falcons.

"We tried like hell to get him," Mangini said this week.

Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum were offering defensive end John Abraham to Atlanta straight-up for Schaub, whose two starts behind Michael Vick had enticed the Jets. The talks for Schaub fell apart, but the Jets ended up shipping Abraham to Atlanta for the 29th pick in the 2006 draft. Mangini and Co. used that to select center Nick Mangold, but only after trying to trade the pick to the San Diego Chargers for running back Michael Turner.

Doing the math, we can safely assume a rapidly developing Schaub would have outlasted the oft-injured Chad Pennington and prevented the acquisitions of Brett Favre, Mark Sanchez and -- almost certainly -- Tim Tebow.

Something for Jets fans to chew on Monday night.

yes they were after schaub and many fans also wanted him. no doubt he's a good qb and is the main reason why the texans are doing well. especially since the texans went through their own string of highly drafted qb's like david carr.

Awesome!!! The jets wanted schaub. Didn't get him. This post is irrelevant and a waste of my time.

Theoretically you could have determined the premise of the thread from its title, skipped it, and preserved the 20 seconds of precious time you used to type your response.

Yet you didn't.

Schaub is a Top 15 QB.

And he was lighting up back when they had no defense or running game. Dude is legit

We wanted Peyton Manning too. Let's talk about how the last 15 years would be different if we had gotten him!

When?

Schaub is a 9-year injury prone Vet that hasn't done jack beyond a career best 9-7 record three years ago.

This info, if true, shows how Mangini had the eye for talent. Schaub and Michael Turner were two guys who could have really helped the Jets.

From 08-10, Schaub was lighting it up. 2 years he throw for almost 5K yards. If he had an RB and a defense, the Texans would have been a contender earlier.

They each would've been positive additions for the Jets (as it turned out), but I don't mind that the Jets got the best center in football rather than a pretty good running back. At the time most people probably would've been skeptical about Schaub since he only had a two game body of work with Atlanta to judge by. As it turned out he's developed into a very good quarterback, who knows how things would've turned out if they had been able to make the deal, but it's ancient history by now...

IIRC, Parcells refused to assure Archie Manning that he would draft Peyton in 97-98, leading Manning to stay one more year in college.

interesting, I thought the reason the Mannings shunned the Jets was because Parcells could not commit to being the head coach long term.

No, I believes Equilibrium is right. Parcells wouldn't guarantee he wouldn't trade the pick. As Parcells once explained it the Jets had committed a lot of money to Neil O'Donnell as a Free Agent in '96.
