As a student, Khan worked in the Tulane football office filming practices and games and making travel arrangements. He filled a similar capacity during an internship with the New Orleans Saints while he was still in school. Once he graduated in 1997, he was brought on in a full-time role by the Saints. He worked his way up the ladder in New Orleans by doing anything that was asked of him.

In 2001 he was hired by the Steelers and has served as their chief contract negotiator and capologist, replacing Dan Ferens.[4] In that role he has helped to assemble two Super Bowl winners.

Omar Khan's strengths are contract negotiations and salary cap expertise. Jets are in dire need to for an upgrade in those areas. #nyj

I mean, I get WHY we're interviewing a cap guy. But, I'd prefer we go with a football guy instead.

Is this true? because from what i understand we had a guy who had these strengths and WE FIRED HIM! i woud think we desperately need a football guy who has a eye for talent.

Bottom line this would be a terrible hire. This guy sounds like a young Tannenbaum. Strictly a cap guy. Only 35 years old and has zero experience with scouting and personnel.

Wasn't the Steelers MO not resigning their veterans? I mean the Steelers are a team built through the draft, unlike Tanny having to move money all over the place to fit in big contracts.

So no background in personnel, no background in scouting.

Thank you Woody for leaving no stone unturned.

Only the Jets. Reliving the mid 1970s.

Good times.

They're bringing this guy in for a GM interview?

pass.

edit: actually, i can see it now: they bring in Khan and keep Cohen and sell it as a duel partnership.

Now seriously the one difference between him and Tannenbaum is that Khan comes from a winning pedigree (The Steelers). That alone makes him valuable.

And actually a lot of Steelers fans on twitter are going crazy telling him not to go.

I think people are overestimating this "Cap Guru" stuff....

every team must have people doing the same thing? Are all those teams struggling to understand how the cap works or how to field a competitive team under the cap rules?

I am all for any real football guy, but I will vomit if this is the guy. IMO 35 yr old's can't possibly know enough (experience) to be any good at such a multi-faceated job. A GM job should be a bit of a achievement for a life's work of knowledge not a reward for being an eager beaver.
