Khan or Idzik

According to Mehta it appears to be a two man race. Cohen virtually eliminated so it seems down to Khan or Idzik. Who do you prefer. I was going to do a two man poll but there appears to be another GM poll posted.

Manish Mehta ‏@MMehtaNYDN

It appears Jets will go with external candidate to be new GM (Khan & Idzik have had 2nd interviews). I'm hearing Scott Cohen is on periphery

I wouldn't be surprised if it breaks tonight or tomorrow.

If there is a thread that claims it is down to just these two, I haven't seen it.

Aren't they both essentially "cap guys" a la Tannenbau? Jeez, this is depressing. But if I had to guess I'd say Idzik because he is way more experienced, i.e. easier for Woody to justify.

I'm for Kahn. I like the fact that he knows how the Steelers operate and they've been winning a lot of football games for many years with talented, deep rosters; little patience for players who over-value themselves, and a record of hiring very good football coaches.

By the way if Kahn gets the Job, how long before the Post runs a Wrath of Kahn headline when guys start getting released to make cap room?

I think it's foolish to think just because Tanny was a cap guy, that all cap people will operate the same way. Khan learned from arguably the best in the business. If he can come here and instill the Steeler Way, then I'm all for him being the GM.

I'd be fine with Idzik as well. Both sound like strong candidates.

Idzik is my choice, but I agree that Khan would also be a good selection.

Steelers run their team right - draft well and give second, reasonable, contracts to guys who deserve them. Don't overpay for anyone. Pay them their worth and, if they ask for too much, move them on and plug in a younger, cheaper guy you have been developing.

Idzik is the safer and more experienced choice IMO, but Khan is a smart guy who has learned well in Pittsburgh.

Khan. He didn't need his dad to get him a job in the NFL.

I'd be satisfied with either but would probably prefer Idzik for his scouting/personnel experience. Khan is intriguing due to the Cowher connection though.

While we wait to hear whether John Idzik will be announced as general manager of the Jets today, it might be worth considering what Seahawks fans think of him. Below is what SB Nation's Seahawks blog, Field Gulls, wrote yesterday.

In addition to all this coaching carousel talk, Seattle stands to lose a central figure in their front office, VP of Football Operations, John Idzik, as he interviews with the Jets for their vacant GM position for a 2nd time today. Idzik, from what I understand, has been an integral piece of Seattle's rebuild and the man behind the salary cap management over the past few years. The Seahawks have been tight with their money, but this frugality has led Seattle to become one of the best-managed franchises in the NFL over the past two or three years, a stark contrast to teams like the Raiders and Ravens, for instance, who face the possibility of dropping key players because of cap overages.

According to the Seahawks' website, Idzik "oversees player negotiations, the team's compliance with the NFL salary cap, player personnel transactions, all football operations budgets, staff and team contracts, team travel and most aspects of the day-to-day football operations while also remaining active in player evaluations."

Albert Breer also pointed out yesterday that the final sentence up there is true, Idzik has a role in scouting players, and the Seahawks have sent him on the road with this function of late. This dual ability - a business management acumen plus an ability to evaluate talent - is what makes him so valuable to the Seahawks and attractive to the Jets. I don't know if it's warranted, but I'm almost more worried about losing Idzik than I am about losing Bevell or Bradley.
