Wants a 5 year deal with a no trade clause. He is 33 years old. The Sox NEVER give out no trade deals and if they did it would mean Manny would then have one as that was part of his deal.
I blame Boras. Varitek obviously wants to remain in Boston. I have no problems with them signing him for 3 years, but 5 with a no trade clause is simply too much even for Varitek. The Sox have 2 solid catching prospects already. I think they will get him, but will overpay to get him which in turn I think will have Cabera being shown the door. |

I agree with you SJ. I would love to see Tek stay, but not at the cost of a 5 year contract. Especially, a catcher at his age. I doubt Cabrerra stays anyway. The SS FA list is full of some seasoned vets with decent bats and gloves. With Ramirez being projected to be in the bigs by 2006. They can sign a stop gap vet like Vizqueil, Valentin, Guzman, Chris Gomez, Royce Clayton, Vizcaino, Counsell or Aurillia to get through the 2005 season. Hey, Nomar is outh there. |

The plus side is that the Sox are going to have a "Moneyball" type draft........
Cabrera Pedro Varitek Lowe are all class A FAs.... I expect the Sox to offer arbitartion to all four, and only sign one. That's 6 1st and sandwich picks added.... maybe the Sox sign a FA of their own and lose a 1st, but all in all, they'll have ammo in the draft. |
