Stevens is up for re-election in 2008 and the race has been a toss-up, with his Dem challenger slightly ahead in the polls. This is a key race for the Democrats if they want a veto-proof (or Lieberman-proof) Senate majority.

He needs better advice than Jefferson could give him right now.

Pretty hard to win a close election when you're under indictment.
The GOP is facing certain senate seat losses in Colorado, Virginia, New Mexico and New Hampshire. It has tossup battles for seats it holds in Minnesota, Mississippi, Oregon and this one in Alaska, which is probably now a Dem lock.

by the way this is a HUGE deal to have a Senator with 40 years of seniority get indicted. In senate terms he's a t-rex, someone like hillary is a little woodland creature by comparison. When you get that much seniority the power just grows - Senator Stevens - Just another in the long line of GOP scandal.
