Arena football looks to return in 2010, but Kansas City won’t be part of it.

Teams from the Arena Football League and the arenafootball2 minor league are expected to announce Monday the formation of a new league. But Brigade owner Chris Likens said Thursday that he was not joining the new league — which will apparently be called Arena Football 1 and start play in late March or early April.

“We’re staying with the AFL, we still believe in the AFL,” said Likens, who said he’s lost millions with the Brigade since he purchased the team. “To me, this other league won’t be the same product.”

Likens said a big reason for that is because players will make significantly less, and he’s only aware of a handful of AFL teams — Arizona, San Jose and maybe Orlando — that will jump ship.

Likens said the AFL’s remaining owners are still planning on coming back in 2011.

“Currently, we are working on a single-operating business model where all the teams would work together to control costs and sell tickets,” Likens said.

Despite his optimism for an eventual return, the announcement looks like another blow to the AFL, which canceled its 2009 season and decided to suspend operations indefinitely a few months ago. Likens also confirmed the league is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Rampage official says team not interested in being part of new Arena Football 1 league

GRAND RAPIDS -- The planned announcement of a new indoor football league promoting itself as Arena Football 1 will not include the Grand Rapids Rampage, a team official told The Press late Thursday.

It just isn't the real deal, Rampage chief operating officer Scott Gorsline said.

"No, we are not going to be part of it," he said of the formation of Arena Football 1 as a possible replacement for the shuttered Arena Football League. "I think there is some potential for confusion. This is not the Arena Football League. We remain involved in an effort to bring back the highest level of Arena Football."

Arena Football 1 is expected to include several teams from arenafootball2, an AFL developmental league, and a few castoff franchises from the AFL. The new league is set to be unveiled at a news conference Monday morning.

It essentially will split the af2 into upper and lower tiers.

In the meantime, Gorsline said the Rampage are "one of the teams" taking a leadership role in pursuing a potential relaunch of the AFL in 2011.

The premier indoor league has been dormant since the end of the 2008 season when it shut down as a result of deep financial losses and crumbling economic conditions.

"We are one of the teams leading the charge," Gorsline said. "We are definitely one of a number of teams that are having regular conversations to bring back the AFL. We still believe in the product. We still want to see the Arena Football League back on the field. I remain optimistic Arena Football will return."

It just isn't likely to happen before 2011.

The AFL suspended operations indefinitely this summer.

Jim Renacci, president of the Columbus Destroyers, had been leading the restructuring effort on the league's behalf. He since has abandoned the AFL to pursue a congressional campaign in Ohio.

"At this point, 2010 becomes very difficult," Gorsline said. "The AFL to start back up and do it right in time for 2010 would be a major undertaking.

"There's still a lot of work to do. I've always believed the league would be back. It's just a question of when and what it's going to look like."

Lamberti estimated af1 will have about 25 teams, with 12-16 of them former af2 markets, 6-10 former AFL markets, and perhaps some cities that will be new to arena football.

The Utah Blaze, formerly of the Arena Football League, will not be a part of the new league, however.

"The Utah Blaze is definitely not part of this upstart league (Arena Football 1)," Blaze owner John Garff wrote in an e-mail to the Deseret News on Thursday. "Our current plan, in action, is to facilitate the rebirth of the AFL in 2011."

A news conference is planned Monday to announce the formation of the new league called Arena Football 1 with teams from the former AFL and arenafootball2 leagues.

"The owners meetings are Monday morning, and they're really going to line everything out on Monday morning as far as how the divisions go and what teams from the AFL are actually going to join Arena Football 1 and what teams from AF2 are going to join," said Troy Thompson, director of operations for the Arkansas Twisters.

Representatives of the af2 teams in Oklahoma City, Arkansas, and Spokane, Wash., all confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday that they intend to participate. Iowa's af2 franchise also plans to send a representative to the meetings.

"There's still a lot that's going to be finalized over the weekend but everyone's excited about the movement of the league," Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz general manager Christie Cook said.

The old AFL canceled its 2009 season before eventually folding in August, ending a 22-year run for the high-scoring indoor brand of football that helped launch the career of NFL MVP and Super Bowl winner Kurt Warner. Play in af2 was never disrupted, but teams ended the season unsure of what would happen next.

"When the AFL went bankrupt and dissolved the AFL, because the af2 was an arm of the AFL, af2 in a sense was dissolved as well. This is basically the af2 reforming itself, and then from there, whatever they're going to do with the remaining AFL teams that want to continue to play," Thompson said.

The AFL had 17 teams during the 2008 season, but the Los Angeles and New Orleans franchises folded before the 2009 season was canceled. There were another 25 teams in af2 last season.

"There could be an upper tier and a lower tier in Arena Football 1, almost like college football has a Division I and a Division II," Thompson said. "Arena Football 1 could have a Division I and a Division II. That's still kind of unclear."

Jerry Kurz, the commissioner of af2, did not immediately return telephone calls from The Associated Press on Thursday. Senior director of team development Ron Armour also did not return messages.

"It's a higher level of football than the af2. It is going to be closely akin to the AFL," said Kevin Maloney, spokesman for the Spokane Shock — winners of this year's ArenaCup given to the af2 champions.

"It will be the best brand of arena football there is in the world."

Cook said training camps will open in March and a 16-week season will begin in either late March or early April, the same basic timeframe as before for the leagues — filling the football void opposite the NFL and college seasons.

Maloney said the business model of the new league will closely mimic that of af2, with players all receiving the same salary.

Beyond the high-scoring games that made it onto network television, the original Arena Football League made headlines with owners that included Jon Bon Jovi, Mike Ditka and John Elway. Teams were located in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and other major markets.

Managing partner: Rattlers to resume in 2010

Brett Bouchy said the Arizona Rattlers will be involved in a new, restructured arena football league that will be announced at a news conference Monday in Tulsa, Okla.

The new league, which will begin play in April, will have teams from the suspended AFL and the current af2.

“It’s a done deal,” Bouchy said Friday.

Bouchy couldn’t say how many teams would be involved, but it was reported by the Tulsa World that there will be between 22 and 30 involved in two tiers. The Rattlers will play in the higher tier.

The new league will be headquartered in Tulsa, where the Talons are a successful af2 team.

Bouchy said the Rattlers will be controlled by a corporation based in Delaware.

He said he will remain as managing partner of the team.

“I’m very excited after nine or 10 months of a lot of false starts,” Bouchy said. “I’m excited about playing football in 2010.”

Nobody who used to coach and play for the Rattlers are under contract.

Bouchy said he hopes to keep Kevin Guy as his head coach and Danny White as the offensive coordinator. Guy and White never got a chance to work together. The Arena Football League began to collapse shortly after White came aboard.

Guy, whose family has settled in Gilbert, said other teams have spoken to him but he is interested in staying here. He said he keeps in constant communication with White and hopes to work with him.

“I’ve spoken to Danny and he’s like me, we both want to see what the contracts look like, how the league is going to be set up,” Guy said. “Nothing has been really shared.”

Bouchy said more details will come out Monday.

He also said all 2009 season ticket deposits will be honored by the new corporation.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A news conference is planned in Tulsa, Oklahoma Monday to announce the formation of a new league called Arena Football 1 with teams from the former AFL and arenafootball2 leagues.

According to Brett Bouchy, who owned the Orlando Predators in the now defunct AFL, Orlando will have a team in the new league.

"I'm flying to Tulsa Sunday night if that tells you anything," Bouchy told Channel 9 over the phone on Friday.

Bouchy says he's working with a slightly different ownership group than the one that ran the Predators but the goal of keeping indoor football in Orlando has remained the same.

Paul Ross, a co-owner of the Tulsa team told Channel 9 he expects 12-14 franchises to turn in the application and down payment required to join the league.

When asked if Orlando, one of the more succesful franchises in the former AFL, would be involved in the new league Ross replied, "I hope so."

The old AFL canceled its 2009 season before eventually folding in August, ending a 22-year run for the high-scoring indoor brand of football that helped launch the career of NFL MVP and Super Bowl winner Kurt Warner. Arena Football officials have called a news conference on Monday that will determine whether the Albany Firebirds of arenafootball2 will return for the 2010 season.

"You'll find out Monday," Firebirds owner Walter Robb said when reached at his home Friday night.

Af2 president Jerry Kurz will lead the news conference in Tulsa, Okla., where he will unveil a newly formed league of Arena Football teams. It's unclear whether the Firebirds will be part of that structure.

The Arena Football League folded this year, which left af2's future in question.

Firebirds general manager Garen Szablewski said earlier this month that a new league might be a combination of AFL and af2 franchises.

The Firebirds, who just completed their eighth season, have struggled financially.
