Keep running a program for the benefit of the students? Do you mean those students who don't even support their school's own team or should the school keep a $4.5 mil a yr program in place for the benefit of the 60 or so guys on the team? Sounds like a huge waste of money either way.

Hofstra is a private university and a business. They don't have a huge endowment and can't afford to piss money on a useless football program that no one, students included, wants to watch.

A lot more people go to see Hofstra lacrosse than ever went to see Hofstra football. They'd never kill a lacrosse program on LI.

Thanks, Sheldon, you stinking bastard
I have no love lost for Silver...he's a scumbag....but Woody is a moron thinking he could get this stadium through in NY without enlisting Democratic leadership support and the Dolans.

That is a Woody blunder....and then he scres it up more my jumping in bed with the Giants in NJ.

Who really thinks the Jets will get the first regular season game in the new stadium?

yep, but the Jets would be able to draw 80k from the long island fan base though....

perhaps you forgot that college is for all students, men and women.

it appears in this case, the football team wasn't subsidizing anything but rather a cash drain.

This will be the death knell for most men's sports except programs that are
competing for the big dollars. Except for those sports that require very few
$ to match woman's sports expenditures, the rest of the programs are history.

Like any and all government programs, unintended consequences are beyond
the capacity for bureaucrats to comprehend and therefore manage to not
only destroy existing programs but when all is said and done, provide no
additional benefit for the women. Since the Universities aren't spending any
money on the men's sports they don't have to match any monies on the
women's side. Net benefit for the ladies = None. Destruction of men's
sports = Done.

But it makes the socialists feel great that they leveled the playing field except
that the field is a lot lower than when they started. Dumb ****ers!

second CAA program this week as Northeastern dropped football earlier this week...

really can't blame them- no one ever supported the team...

I would go to games in 1999 to watch Gino Carmazii when Hofstra was in the quarterfinals of the IAA playoffs and expected to make the title game and the stadium was 1/8 full...

I'd go to see Marques Colston, Bryant Westbrook, and others and there's be more people on the field w/the band then in the stands at times...

too bad- it was a nice opportunity to see the UMass's, William & Mary's, Richmond's without driving for hours....

2 teams in a couple of weeks lost by the CAA.

And that's the best Football conference in Division 1AA.

4 of the remaining 8 teams in the Division 1AA Playoffs are CAA teams.
(Richmond...Villanova...New Hampshire...William & Mary)

Shame.
who'd Richmond beat???

It's sad that Hofstra wasn't getting the school or local support during the games. Did the school warn the local area, along with the students of the school, that they would shut down the Football Program in advance, before they actually shut it down?

All I know is this...If a team such as Hofstra played in a small town/city here in FLorida...Those games would get sold out. High School and college Football is HUGE down here in the south, one of the reasons why teams such as Miami, FLorida, USF and FLorida State ALL have elite talent on the team, year in and year out. Those players on these FLorida teams are pretty much all from FLorida, some are H.S students from Georgia at times.

FL, GA, TX, AL...These southern states live and die for Football...You see little kids playing Football 24/7 when you leave the house, you really never see them playing Baseball. Basketball is pretty big down here, but NOTHING like Football.

Honestly, NY and other Northern States are huge on Baseball and Basketball, Football? Not so much.

As far as the NFL goes...Giants, Bills, Jets, Eagles and Steelers fans are as loyal as they come, as good as they get. Fan bases such as Bucs, Dolphins, Falcons, Saints and Jaguars cant compete with those up north fans but as far as H.S and College Football goes, it's not even close, the SOuth LOVES it.

Yes, but were Hofstra in the south, it wouldn't be Hofstra.

It'd be some crappy Southern local college. The South sucks.

I think, given a choice, Hofstra would rather be in the North sans football, than be in the South with a real football following.

They are trying to turn out doctors with their new med school, not used car salesman.

Perhaps you forgot that money pays the bills.

Not specific to Hofstra, because I care little about the institution, but big time football programs at big time schools are the ONLY reason there is a Womens tennis team or soccer team of basketball team or swimming team.

College is for ALL students.

Sports is for those that can AFFORD to field teams.

Women's synchronized diving doesn't pay the bills.

Ouchie!

Still very sad though. Despite the supposedly new realization that this program was faltering, you cant but help think the current Hofstra pres. came in with an agenda. I see no evidence they tried to sell the program.

They let it die. Very sad.

Tell me about it. My roommate at Syracuse was a scholarship athlete wrestler (from Lake Ronkonkama). Title IX shut down the Syracuse Wrestling team when he was a senior.

Title IX, Affirmative Action?

They all suck, trying to correct the Sins of our Fathers.

i think we are on the same page somewhat. outside of the big time football schools, Football is a cost sink for the smaller schools. unless they have large endowments, football will get dropped.
