Agreed. Very good point. But it's still kinda sad that one of our best decades depends on a win Sunday to reach .500 over a 160 game span this decade. :O

With that said, 5 playoff trips would VERY good for this franchise in a 10 year period. And, the .500 record is kinda misleading as there were two really bad seasons (2005, 2007) with only 4 wins each (8 wins, 24 losses) that really bring down the average for this decade. For the most part, the Jets have been a 9 to 10 win team in most seasons through the decade. In fact, a win on Sunday and the Jets are BETTER than .500 in 7 out of their last 10 seasons. THAT is definitely not Same Old Jets.
all true. and if you throw out the artificial confines of the decade, the Jets have only had 3 losing seasons out of the past 13. That compares favorably with almost any frachise in the league. We also went 6 years in a row without a losing season (97-02). None of that jibes with the "same ol Jets" stereotype that presents us as one of the worst franchises in the league. There are many teams that are far worse, and teams like the Ravens are presented as respected perennial contenders, but they make the playoffs about as much as we do and also have the occasional stinker of a season.

I think the real reason no one seems to realize that the Jets have been very solid for a while now is that we haven't made any real noise in the playoffs. One AFC championship game, no super bowls during the stretch since we got good (97 on). We've only been bad a few seasons, but we've also never been great.

i'm feeling very positive that greatness isn't too far off though. Lets hope in ten years we are posting in a thread about a decade of truly powerful football.
A string of ten 16-game regular seasons comes to an end on Sunday, two days after we actually usher in a new decade. With a win the Jets will be exactly .500 for the decade (80-80). Haven't seen anyone else talk about it so thought I'd bring it up. I also started digging around on other performances of the decade...

2000 through the current 2009 season. Best offensive and defensive ranks:

Offensive points: 2008, Ranked 9th in NFL
Offensive yards: 2000 and 2004, Ranked 12th in NFL both years

Defensive points: 2009, Ranked 1st in NFL so far, (2004 Ranked 4th in NFL)
Defensive yards: 2009, Ranked 1st in NFL so far, (2004 Ranked 7th in NFL)

That 2004 team was clearly the Jets best and most balanced of the decade. They went 10-6, winning the Wild Card game in San Diego 20-17 before losing the Divisional playoff in Pittsburgh also by a score of 20-17.

Best Season Point Differential: 2009 (currently +75), 2004 (+72)
* I found this statistic very interesting.

Best Season Points For: 2008 (405 total points) which is 2nd most in team history (416 in 1998)
Best Season Points Against: 2009 (236 so far), 2004 (261 total points). So if the Jets give up less than 25 points to Cincy on Sunday that will be their best performance of the decade. If they give up less than 11 points it will be the best Jets defense of all-time in terms of points allowed (Jets gave up 247 in 1993).

Some notable individual performances of the decade

Best Passing seasons: Testaverde in 2000 (3732 yards), Favre in 2008 (3472 yards)
Most Passing TDs season: Pennington in 2002, Favre in 2008 (both had 22)
Most Rushing yards season: Martin in 2004 (1697), Martin in 2001 (1513)
Most Rushing TDs season: Jones 2008 (13); Jones in 2009, Martin in 2004 (each with 12)
Most Receiving yards season: Coles in 2002 (1264)
Most Receiving TDs season: Santana Moss in 2003 (10), Wayne Chrebet in 2002 (9)

Most Pro Bowls during the decade: Kevin Mawae (5), 2nd all-time to Winston Hill for most Pro Bowl appearances by a Jet

And finally, something I find really cool...

Most Games Played: When Shaun Ellis takes the field on Sunday night he will have played in 155 of the 160 regular season games the New York Jets have played this decade. Wow! Congratulations Shaun!

Please feel free to add to this list and definitely let me know if you think there are any errors.

Happy New Year to All and let's hope the next 10 years find the Jets on the north side of .500 and possibly in possession of some jewelry!
You been hanging out with DWC??? :P

Technically we already secured an 80-80 record in regular season games this decade.

On January 2, 2000 the Jets beat the Seahawks in Bill Parcell's last game as NYJ head coach.
