Lowery as Safety?

Any way Lowery could take over the Safety position.

Figure he is just as good as Carrie if not better, he must be faster and has better coverage skills.

Would be nice to have another 21 back there putting in them Hits!

its been something that the message boards have discussed since he was drafted... until i see a news Item that reads "Jets trying out Lowery at safety" i can't really take it seriously. we always talk about this position swap it never happens. right now lowery is the nickel that's basically a starting spot too these days.

I'm sure you saw tape of him, any reason he wouldn't be a good choice as a center field type of free safety?

The reluctance by some to even consider this makes me wonder: if CB's can move to safety in their later years, why not do this now with Lowery? I get the feeling that some with clearer insight to #21's skills and temperament are balking at the idea.

What's up with that?

Guys,

I SWEAR that I remember reading that Lowery played some safety in college.
I swear I read that somewhere when we drafted him...

Couldn't find anything about him playing safety except in Junior College.

This "expert" however had this observation on him.

01/27/10 - CB Dwight Lowery has good technique and ball skills but his lack of speed and quickness was exposed by Indy WR Pierre Garcon in the AFC title game. Lowery might be better suited for safety if the Jets do trade Kerry Rhodes.

Here is a one that says "Lowery may be the best corner back in the draft." Again, I have no idea who this expert may be...

Played Free safety at Cabrillo Junior College.

Why not give him a try, seems to me that everyone says he has the eye. Maybe he just isn't corner quality and needs to a little room to roam.

Yes!!
Thats it. As a freshman and sophomore at Cabrillo College, he played Safety and had 13 interceptions in 15 games...

I remember Lowery's pick against the Colts as being a 'safety-esque' play. He does seem like a natural fit at safety. If we wind up signing a guy like Marlin Jackson...I'm all for trying Lowery out at safety. Especially if it allows us to focus on DE/OLB/WR in the draft.

Give him a shot, I'm sure he can cover better than Smith and other guy.

Smith is better in run support but is nowhere near as good in pass protection as Rhodes is.

he's also not nearly as good in the "pointing fingers and waving arms at teammates to blame them for his own failures" category
