What's the plan with FS?

I do think that it was time for Rhodes to go, and am happy he did. He never lived up to his expectations and to be honest to get into the reasons why he left would be beating a dead horse.

I'm a little unclear on what the Jets are doing with FS. I mean Atogwe was out there for the taking and the Jets didn't make a serious run at him. Instead they bring in Pool who is one concussion away from retirement.

Obviously I'm glad they resigned Eric Smith. But Smith and Pool are the same type of player. Both good hitters and with average cover skills.

We really don't have a coverage guy back there. It's possible the Jets feel that Cromartie's cover skills and Pool/Smiths tackling skills mesh well on that side of the field.

But either way I don't feel comfortable with Pool being relied on heavily and I have HEARD the Jets are looking FS in the draft.

So what do you think the plan is at FS?

I think we'll go FS in the 2nd round and have a rotation with him/Dig/Smith/Pool. Whomever steps up will get most of the reps.

Morgan Burnett, Chad Jones, or Reshad Jones would be sweet at 61.

Don't agree that Smith and Pool are the same players, Pool has the ability to cover in man as he has played CB in the NFL before because of injuries something Smith could never do. Hes faster and has more athletic ability. His numbers last year before he went down were actually pretty good and better than Rhodes.

I do agree though that I am worried about Pool and his concussions.

Is Atogwe out of the question now?

As far as the draft, I like all of the players listed in the previous post as long as they are 2nd round picks. Another idea would be trading down around 5-10 spots if possible and picking up Nate Allen.

I can see them moving Lowery to safety. At 29 I think they can draft McCourty, Wilson or Robinson to play nickel , give the team a little depth at CB. Altough I like Nate Allen or Morgen Burnett at safety in the second round, there are very good values at CB in Ghee, Kareem Jackson, Jerome Murphy and Dominick Franks.
It has already been pointed out that Pool , Ihedigbo and Eric Smith have a similar skill set, strong against the run, may lack range and coverage ability.
Lowery is an average corner, got torched by the Colts ( a lot of corners have been Manning Toast) but does a decent job at nickel. Lowery can tackle , has very good ball skills, give you range and coverage ability form the Safety position. Lowery being a third year player, and having a year in Rex's system will enable him easily make the transition to safety.
I can see a Smith/Lowery platoon at Safety.

If I were Tannny, I would look for a Hard hitting Corner Back, that maybe lacks top Corner Back speed, in rounds 4-7. Move that guy to FS.

Lowery is my pick to start. They'll be fine with the group they have, sprinkled in witha couple of 1st year guys.

^ Now, I don't know too much about these guys, but these are the types of Corner Backs that translate to FS. I am of the belief that teams don't need to waste top picks on Safeties. There are plenty of tweeners in college like this:

Javier Arenas Alabama
Physical cornerback who helps out as a return specialist. Lacks elite corner speed and may need to be placed in a system which protects him. Greatest contributions may come on special teams.
Syd'Quan Thompson California
Strong, aggressive cornerback with solid ball skills. Best in press coverage. Lacks top end speed and will be downgraded as a result. Pre-draft forty times are critical.
Donovan Warren Michigan
Nice sized corner who beats down opponents to defend the ball. Has shown flashes of brilliance shutting down opponents yet must do it on a consistent basis.
Kevin Thomas USC
Solid cornerback prospect coming off a breakout season. Possesses the athleticism and ball skills to play at the next level yet needs time to develop his game.
Dennis Rogan Tennessee
Physical college cornerback who may be better off at safety. Plays heads up football, displays solid awareness and also helps out on special teams.

Just a numbers observation.
The Jets will probably carry 10 DBs. 6 at CB, 4 at S.
Right now the have 4 safeties and 5 CBs. Can see them adding a CB late because the starters are as good a combo as there is.
Who would they drop at safety currently there? 4 decent guys. A late pick either goes to PS or a current guy goes. More likely they rely on some player's position flexibility to play both CB and S..

Just in case you're wondering about the roster. 9LB, 7 DL = 26 total on Def - just a guess. 8 OL, 3 TE, 5WR, 3 QB, 3 RB, 2 FB = 24

Watch for the Jets to address the FS issue in the draft. I wouldn't be surprised if we came away with Mays.

I don't know at #29. Trade up would cost 1 & 2. Get a 4 back maybe.
But which S on the roster would go? Carry 5? A lot, no?

If Earl Thomas is available in Round 1 I could see the Jets looking to picking him up.

I think the plan for FS is this...

in FA, get rid of Sherry Rhodes and get an extra draft pick for it and then sign Brodney Pool from Cleveland.

then see if a FS is the BPA on day 2 of the draft

+1

They've already added Pool to our S depth chart...maybe they draft another healthier guy with a similar skillset on Day 2.

How far do you think Berry needs to fall for us to make a move up? I don't see it happening at all personally but I do think we could trade up for Thomas at 19 or 20.
