Sims-Walker takes minor shots at Revis, Jags' offensive line
Our freelance reporter Rick Cordella, who moonlights as the G.M. of NBC Sports Digital, had one more bit of information from his brief trip to Las Vegas for the Interactive Sports Conference.
Jaguars receiver Mike Sims-Walker was in attendance, and Sims-Walker answered some questions in a roomful of folks. Though Chris Johnson was more colorful and outspoken, Sims-Walker offered up a few nuggets worth mentioning. As to Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, widely regarded as one of the best cover corners in the game, Sims-Walker said that Revis plays for the best defensive team, and that he has lots of safety help. (Sims-Walker added the CYA caveat "not to take anything away from him" after, of course, taking something away from him.) Regarding Jags quarterback, David Garrard, Sims-Walker was asked whether Garrard is "elite," probably since coach Jack Del Rio recently suggested that Garrard isn't. Sims-Walker said that Garrard can be elite, if he gets time in the pocket. Finally, regarding the one player who has been most linked with Jacksonville in the offseason -- quarterback Tim Tebow -- Sims-Walker's comments was simple: No comment. Fortunately, Chris Johnson never invokes that answer. |

If you play fantasy football, you know exactly who he is lol. The kid had a great year. Revis had the best year for any defensive player in the league. The dreadlocks must be suffocating his brain. |

The thing is, he actually does get alot of safety help. The significance of that is up to the people I guess, but it's really not that big a deal. Last edited by SenorGato; 03-26-2010 at 08:29 PM. |

Actually he doesn't... Just rewatch the games if you'd like. The Jets rushed more than 4 more than any other team in the league by far and they aren't taking away their underneith guys to do that. Revis gets very little help over the top outside of your typical cover 1 where Kerry just has great range. Rex actually pointed that fact out that with Rhodes and his range, sometimes it appears as if he has safety help on his half of the field. He may still get help some of the time, but it is so much less than your typical corner. |

Revis didn't cover Sims-Walker for much of that game but when he did, MSW didn't do anything.
And actually, the Jets usually shade the safeties away from Revis, hence Revis island. Ever wonder why they throw on him so much? That's the way our defense works, they bait QBs to throw it at him. |

His TD against us wasn't on Revis, it was Lowery or Sheppard on a slant and miss tackle.
Rex actually pointed that fact out that with Rhodes and his range, sometimes it appears as if he has safety help on his half of the field.
So then he was getting help but in appearance only? Is this because Rhodes would quit on it? Or maybe the only plays he got safety help during the season was the Ginn TD, the Sims-Walker TD, and so on? Great players are usually their greatest when there's other talent around them. It doesn't hurt Revis that the rest of the D was good too, and it shouldn't take anything away since he's clearly a key player in that. Last edited by SenorGato; 03-26-2010 at 09:26 PM. |

sure he gets help over the top, but how often does he need it?
Help over the top makes it easier to to judge what to do next, sure, but it doesn't make him able to cover someone as well as he does. |

Yea, it doesn't work one way like that. We have 7 very good starters in our front 7...that's a sh*tload of credit being handed to one guy there. |

Yeah, Revis is great because he plays for the best defensive team....except that he was the best corner in 2008 too, before Rex was even here and the Jets defense was just middle of the pack. He was damn good as a rookie in 2007 as well. Ignorant fool. |

Correct. Rex has mentioned that having Revis allows him to do things with the defense that he normally wouldn't be able to do. There were breakdowns on the NFL Network a few times last season also. There's a reason why someone coined "Revis Island" - he's out there by himself more than any other corner in the league. |
