:-) That could be Randy Moss this year when he comes across the middle. Alligator arms the rest of the game. That hit reminds me of Jack Tatum.

Not to sure how to feel about the kid. As an SC fan, I think Rex likes him and wouldn't be surprised to see him in green. I want the Ed Reed saftey type but who doesn't?? He isn't built to cover.

unfortunately, the league has changed so much that this kind of aggressive play at the Saftey position is frowned upon. Pretty much any big hit is flagged as helmet-to-helmet, even if it isn't. A guy like Mays with this aggressive style doesn't translate well to the NFL anymore because of the rule changes.

I know it's to keep players safe, but I hate what has happened to the NFL.

taylor mays is actually underrated at this point

he's a rare once in ten years type of athlete

his dad was in the league so he knows what it takes

comes from a fantastic program

no problems (like dez bryant forgetting his shoes)

hard working blue collar football player through and through

think about what rex hated about rhodes, not hitting etc, mays is a huge hitter

he'd be a beast in a 46 look

im a fan, especially at 29 prices.

Sign me up on the "Mays at 29" bandwagon!!

Dude looked like a Mac truck cruising down I95.

He is DEFINITELY a Rex Ryan type player and I would be surprised to see us not pull the trigger if he is there for the picking.

He will be a beast!!

The Case for Taylor Mays

by Crackback on Mar 28, 2010 2:27 PM EDT Comment 12 comments

Lets get this out of the way first and foremost... Taylor Mays can't cover receivers. He often makes poor initial reads and he often takes terrible angles. Mays is not likely to be successful as a FS in the NFL where the QBs and WRs are too good. He would get looked off and pump-faked and burned over and over again. He would be exploited if given sideline-to-sideline responsibilities.

Does that mean that he can't play in the NFL? Absolutely not. He just can't play FS. I think that what happens with guys like Mays is that when they have been so good for so long (started since his freshment year) that it gets old and stale to gush over them repeatedly, and people start to over-emphasize his weaknesses and nitpick ad nausiem. So lets refocus on what the young man does well and what type of system is best suited for his talents.

Star-divide

As many of us know, Mays is a physical specimen. 6'4", 230 lbs, 4.3. He's aggressive and intimidating. He can cover ground quickly with his elite speed and he can destroy whatever crosses his path. He's excellent in run support and is lightning as a blitzer.

The best way to use Mays is to simplify/limit his reads, minimize his man coverage on wide-outs, let him play down hill, and involve him in the blitz game. The best scheme for him to be in is one where he can be utilized in run-support, that blitzes heavily and applies pressure on QBs quickly.

Taylor Mays is tailor-made to play SS for the Jets. In our system we apply pressure quickly, often using strong safeties to get there. We also don't ask our SS to roam and react much because of this pressure. In addition, our safeties' responsibilities are limited due to the unique coverage abilities of our corners; and because of this, our safeties can be utilized as more of an intimidating force.

Mays blitzing off ofthe edge is down-right horrifying. Mays patrolling the box in a system that forces QBs to release the ball quickly is even scarier. He has the ability to track down and blow up any back in the league. He's a rare type of player that has the ability to get inside your mind and make you worry about where he his at all times and what he might do to you if he finds you. At the wrong position in the wrong system, his talent is a waste. In our system his talent would be unleashed.

Watch out for Mahem Mays. He's as fearsome as they come.

Dude, you ever been out there at WR, know there's a animal play safety waiting to crush your skull, and then have it happen? Only takes one lick like that to make useless as a receiver... Listening for footsteps, taking your eye off the ball, giving up on routes, etc etc.

Anyways, You know with Revis, Cromartie & Co., Mays won't be asked to be play alot of gamesaving coverage on WRs. He's gonna be making sure those douche-back trying to run on the outside/screens get lit up.

The way our Defense works, he might not have to cover a WR often, but he will have to cover a Tight End. And I just don't see Mays being good in that role. I'll defer to Rex if he goes that way, but I'm not convinced on him.

Imagine defensive packages with Leonhard, Pool and Mays. QBs and offensive lineman would have absolutely no clue what was going to happen.

JL and Mays are both all capable of playing strong and free safety. They're interchangeable and take to coaching really well. A lot of people knock Mays for his lack of INTs but my gut tells me he just listened to Carroll and did what he was told. People hate on Leonhard's speed but he's a solid punt returner and has great coverage instincts.

JL and Pool could drop into coverage, Mays blitzes as part of an overload blitz. Mays coming full speed at a QB is going to be a sight to behold especially if he makes contact -- that's pretty much an instant forced fumble. The fact that Mays can be used as a OLB but was brought up as an elite safety is what wins me over. Our team needs, his versatility and drive/passion combined with a late pick at 29 is great value IMO.

JL could blitz and Mays/Pool drop into coverage...any time a receiver catches it over the middle he hast to know that May(s)hem is a step away. We don't have the that now, plain and simple. With one hit from him the ball more than likely is going to be popped up in the air and if Revis/Cro/JL are anywhere near it, its likely a pick. The possibilities that come with drafting him are endless and Rex could draw up plays that no one has seen before.

The defense is statistically and technically sound. We just need to pump up the aggression in the secondary.

Plus as we all know USC Safeties usually suck. Like Ronnie Lott, Mark Carrier and Troy Polumalu.

Yeah it's great they all had the college careers and off the charts athelticism that Mays had. Dude you are so desperate.

Mays isn't good in coverage but Rex Ryan was able to turn Eric Smith into a decent Safety in coverage so maybe he might be able to do something with Mays. Call me crazy you Ricky Martin groupie.
