-Overall musicians, I think John Frusciante, Simon & Garfunkle, Jack Johnson, Free Energy (as a band), Elton John (in america it's like people don't even know who he is!), better than ezra (band)....

just to name a few.

Grateful Dead was my first favorite American band. Blew my mind as a teenager...maybe it's where I grew up, but Greenwich High from 2000-2004 was huge into the Dead. I don't really see them as underrated.

I'm sorry, but when the likes of Jack White, Kurt Cobain, Joni Mitchell and similar are considered better "Guitarists" than Gilmour.....there is indeed a problem of under-rating recognition.

Gilmour absolutely belongs in the Pantheon of G.O.A.T., right next to the Claptons, Pages and Becks. The fact that in many surverys/pollings he often ranks far belong, losing to players not even considered great guitarists at all (Cobain ffs? Joni "are you f'ing kidding me" Mitchell!?!?!) is an abomination of disrespect.

Where have you ever seen these polls? I've never heard of anyone saying that these guys are better guitarists than Gilmour.

Methinks maybe you're looking for something to underrate him. I think everyone realizes he's one of the greatest.

And how do you leave Hendrix, Santana, and Frusciante off a list of GOAT guitarists?

Warren Haynes. Not sure if there is a better guitarist/singer/song writer post 1980. Allman Bros, Gov't Mule, the Dead and Phil & Friends is a pretty cool resume.

(Sorry only audio, no video. The Stones are releasing the classic Stones concert film DVD Ladies & Gentlemen on blu-ray this fall. It's been in theaters but never officially available on VHS or DVD. I've had it for years on boot.

Here is a name many have not heard but Albert Lee was once described by Eric Clapton as the greatest guitarist in the world. He played with everyone from Buddy Holly to Eric Clapton.

I saw him at BB Kings about a month ago and he's still great.

No doubt....I always wanted him to join the band. Nothing takes the place of a real piano. He and Branford always made shows special, 5th row center all week, smokin'.

For me, as an addicted guitarist, Robin Trower has been in my thoughts for many years. Very under-rated touch and feel, and his source of amps was unique back in the day (even though the Hendrix comparisons made Trower seem like a copy-cat). I think his solo on "The Fool and Me" from Bridge of Sighs is absolutely gut-wrenching. And that tension building chord solo on "A Little Bit of Sympathy" is outstanding. A true guitar hero; he's seen in the bigger clubs like Bottom Line these days.

I always felt like the band Marillion were vastly underrated as musicians. They never really caught on here in the US, probably due to their lead singer/song writer Fish's tendency to write longer songs and concept albums which didn't fit the radio media's idea of hit songs. But they really were awesome musicians. They are still around, but Fish left the band and they are no longer the same.

Other vastly underrated guys are the King Crimson guys - Robert Fripp, Tony Levin, and Adrian Belew.

And journeyman Chester Thompson is probably the best drummer in the world that no one ever talks about.
