Pat used to have some amazing lessons on this site; the Forums are very helpful - the guy answers most requests and remembers gigs and places...Pat will be honored by the Kennedy Center or something. Very important "developer" of jazz guitar playing. Not a drop of distortion, but really warm tone, regardless. Here's a Sonny Rollins tune:

I was privileged enough to see Tuck Andress live quite a few years ago and let me tell you, that guy was the best guitar player I've ever seen or heard. He plays some cheesy sh!t here and there but for the money, I've never heard someone play such beautiful things on a guitar. The term virtuoso comes to mind. BTW, I love how this thread took off. Glad to see so many enjoy the jazz. BTW, a great jazz guitar player I came across about 10 years ago by accident is one of my favorites of all time, Billy Bauer.




I edited this to include what is my favorite Billy Bauer song with the best piano solo that I've ever heard in my life... besides one specific Thelonious Monk solo. It's pretty short but for me it's so exact it's mindboggling. You gotta just blast this sh!t so loud and just groove... AHH! Love it.

WOw I just listened to you mix. Is the piano player Lenny Tristiano ?

You will laugh, but I had several lessons with Billy Bauer in Abertson, NY in the late ...er...a while ago. He taught me things I enjoy using today. I had no idea he had an album; he was still taking students when I last chased him down. He did not want money from me for long-distance lessons by mail; he just waved it off. He waved a lot of stuff off, from what I remmeber as a dumb kid pestering him on every little detail.

Denny Dias of Steely Dan is a promionent protege of Billy Bauer. If you are in Nassau or close, bring him lunch or take a lesson, he is a National Treasure. He will show you the arduous single string exercises he uses to have total finger independence.

Tuck Andress and Michael Hedges are ridiculous; Tuck playing "Clean Up Woman" or other hits...He has worked out some amazing beautful things.

That's an awesome story. Billy Bauer is credited as a pioneer of jazz guitar and as a very influential player. That Plectrist album I've come to find out is really rare and his only recording. You are correct on Lenny Tristano being on the record. Unfortunately Billy died in 2005 but that must have been pretty cool taking lessons from a jazz icon.

Any of you folks like David Murray? I was fortunate to see him with his big band, conducted by Butch Morris, another gifted jazz artist in his own right. Also saw him with his quartet, which was, of course, pretty amazing.
