Any love I have personally for jazz is strictly limited to jazzy drum and guitar solos/riffs in "oldies" rock records and instrumentals (usually by jazz-lovin' sessioners, natch) that don't last more than a few bars (e.g. Rock Around The Clock), but I did want to point out that the Smithsonian Channel of all places has been showing some restrospectives/anthologies w/ classic clips. Also a electric guitar history. The jazz shows should be re-airing in a few weeks.

He's a natural. Like you, as a kid, I grew up listening to all the different music, and being young, not knowing exactly what I was hearing. I listened to Zappa for the guitar and drums and the jokes. I had no idea that I was getting a double dose of George Duke. Nowadays, I can begin to hear what he is doing on Inca Roads and Red Baron.

Honestly, I can't thank you enough for posting this. I would never have thought to look for it.

My pleasure. For some reason, I thought of Cobham and this tune yesterday. I was as surprised as you to find that Montreaux set.

My dad is a musician and I grew up on these guys. Monk and Miles are probably my two faves. Sonny Rollins is also a favorite.

Wow, it gets better! I remember Duke playing stuff like that with FZ! The Clark Duke Project was so watered down that I gave up on George Duke. This is like a ****ing treasure chest of funky fusion!

I love that Les Paul he's playing. I think they call it a "TV" or something. Used to train into Manhattan just to look at the guitars on 48th street. That axe reminds me of those days; very much so.

Anyone know what model Les Paul that is in the video?

Sonny Rollins is also one of my favorites, gotta love "Sax Colossus" as well as "Way Out West" - superb stuff, especially on SACD. The second is Jim Hall, no? I think I have a few of his albums on SACD as well, "All Across The City" and "Concierto." Great jazz guitar work indeed.

The second one features Jim Hall but is from Sonny Rollins' album, the Bridge. In the late 50s or early 60s Rollins dropped out of the recording and jazz scene for at least a year, I think, and would practice every night on the Williamsburg Bridge because he apparently liked the accoustics. When he reappeared he released The Bridge, one of his best.
