JACKSONVILLE - The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Thursday the additions of four defensive lineman to the team’s 2012 roster. Richard Berry, Johnny Dingle, Billy Harrison and Elisee Pompilus have all been assigned to the team for next season.

Berry (6’2, 280) was a four-year starter during his time at West Virginia. The 26-year-old capped his Mountaineer career by registering 35 total tackles, four sacks and two fumble recoveries in 2010, his senior season. The North Babylon, NY native signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent during training camp.

Another former West Virginia Mountaineer, the 26-year-old Dingle (6’2, 265) played alongside Berry in 2007. In that year, Dingle led his team with 19 tackles for loss and nine sacks. Forgoing his final year of eligibility, Dingle signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2008 and played during that year’s preseason. A Florida native, Dingle played at Booker T. Washington High School in Miami.

Harrison, 26, played his collegiate football at Tulane. The defensive end made an immediate impact during his freshman season in 2003, registering 65 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Harrison (6’3, 255) grew up in Pensacola, FL, where he made second team all-state in each of his final two high school seasons.

Finally, the 25-year-old Pompilus (6’2, 260) joins the Sharks after playing at Union College (KY), where he was teammates with recent Shark signee Sean Mackey. In his final season as a Bulldog, Pompilus totaled 40 tackles and led the team in both tackles for loss (8.5) and sacks (5.5). He is a native of Malden, MA.

TOP PLAYMAKER SMITH TO RETURN TO SHARKS

JACKSONVILLE – The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Thursday that another key member of the team’s championship secondary will return next season. WR/DB Terrance Smith has been assigned to the team for 2012 for what will be his second season with the Sharks and in the Arena Football League.

The 24-year-old Smith (6’2, 195) played in 16 games during the 2011 regular season, finishing tied for second on the team with six interceptions. Smith proved to be dangerous with the ball in his hands, returning two of those interceptions for touchdowns. The only Shark to record multiple “pick-sixes” in 2011, Smith returned a fumble for a touchdown as well.

Smith finished the year with 65.5 total tackles and 51 solo tackles, ranking third on the team in both categories. He added 16.5 tackles and tied for the team lead with seven pass breakups in the Sharks’ three playoff games.

Before coming to Jacksonville, Smith played wide receiver at South Carolina State, where he caught 40 passes for 542 yards and four touchdowns as a senior in 2009. He also spent time with the Green Bay Packers prior to the 2010 NFL season. Smith is a native of Aiken, SC.

SHARKS OPEN WEEK BY ADDING TWO LINEMEN

JACKSONVILLE - The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Monday the addition of a pair of young linemen, as DL T.J. Langley and OL Josh Vernon have been assigned to the club’s 2012 roster.

Langley, 22, joins the Sharks after concluding his collegiate career at Arkansas Tech. During his senior season, he recorded 23 tackles (17 solo), 5.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, ranking third on his team in the latter category. 2010 was Langley’s first year on defense at the school, as he caught four passes for 31 yards and two touchdowns as a junior in 2009.

Before moving to Arkansas Tech, Langley spent two seasons playing at Northeastern State. He is a native of Hugo, OK.

Vernon, 23, spent his entire collegiate career at TCU. He anchored the right side of the Horned Frog offensive line during 2009 and 2010, starting 24 of the team’s 26 games in those two years. During his junior year the TCU offensive line allowed just 0.92 sacks per game, ranking sixth nationally in the category. Vernon started all 13 games during the 2010 season, helping lead TCU to a 13-0 season that included a Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin.

Vernon did not have to travel far for school, as he lists Irving, TX as his hometown.

SHARKS BRING BACK HOLMAN FOR 2012 SEASON

JACKSONVILLE – The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Thursday that one of the anchors of the team’s defensive line will return next season, as Jason Holman has been assigned to the club's 2012 roster.

“Getting Jason back is a big step in our goal to repeat as AFL champions,” Sharks head coach Les Moss said. “He was our most versatile player and a true ironman in our championship run.”

The 28-year-old Holman (6’3, 305) played in 16 games during the 2011 regular season, recording 13 total tackles (nine solo). Holman was a consistent presence in the opposition's backfield, finishing second on the team with eight tackles for loss and tied for second with six sacks. Holman also contributed on the offensive line and filled in as an injury replacement at fullback.

“[Holman] played every position on the offensive and defensive lines, including taking over for center Randy Degg when he was injured on the first drive of the conference championship game,” Moss said. “Without Jason’s gritty play we would not have won the championship.”

Before joining the Sharks, Holman played for several indoor football teams, including the AFL’s Grand Rapids Rampage and the Indoor Football League’s Billings Outlaws and Richmond Revolution. In 2010, Holman signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. He began his collegiate career at Maryland before transferring to Winston-Salem State. Holman is a native of Midolthan, VA.

SHARKS ADD BIG TARGET IN AVERY

JACKSONVILLE – The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks added size to their receiving corps Tuesday, announcing that Marquis Avery has been assigned to the club’s 2012 roster.

Avery (6’4”, 207) joins the Sharks after finishing his collegiate career at San Jose State. During the 2009 season, Avery led the Spartans with six receiving touchdowns despite playing in just nine of the team’s 12 games. He ranked second on his team in receptions (42), yards (465) and yards per game (51.7).

Before transferring to San Jose State, the 24-year-old Avery attended Fullerton College, where he caught a total of 88 passes for 1,201 yards and 14 touchdowns in his two seasons at the school. In 2008, Avery was named to the First-team All-Mission Conference squad. Avery is a native of Anaheim, CA and attended Savanna High School.

Soul Add ArenaBowl Champion Micheaux Robinson

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Soul have been assigned First Team All-Arena defensive back, Micheaux Robinson (5’9, 175, Otterbein) for the 2012 season. Robinson enters his fourth season in the AFL, joins a group of defensive backs that includes former All-Arena performers, Rayshaun Kizer and Tanner Varner as well as veterans Kent Richardson and Keon Perry.

“Micheaux is one of the best defensive backs in the game today,” said Soul head coach Doug Plank. “He’s the total package – breaking up passes, forcing interceptions, and making tackles. He is a fundamentally sound football player and our defense will benefit greatly from his style of play. We are excited to add him to the mix of an already explosive secondary.”

Robinson is coming off his second season and an ArenaBowl XXIV Championship with the Jacksonville Sharks. In two seasons with the Sharks, he has played in 34 games and holds team records in interceptions (18), tackles (171.0), and pass break-ups (74). He was a finalist for the 2011 Defensive Player of the Year and received First Team All-Arena honors, breaking an AFL record for passes defended in a season with 46.

“The collection of talent coming to Philadelphia made my decision to join the Soul very easy,” said Robinson. “I'm very proud of the accomplishments for our team and the fans of Jacksonville last season, and I am looking to use my talents to help bring a championship to another great team and city.”

Robinson ranked No. 4 in the league with 11 interceptions for the 2011 season. He was awarded Defensive Player of the Week honors for the Week 2 match up versus the Georgia Force, registering 7.0 tackles, two interceptions, while breaking up five passes. Robinson received Second Team All-Arena honors in 2010 registering 63.0 tackles, seven interceptions, and 23 pass breakups.

Before becoming a member of the Jacksonville Sharks, Robinson played for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (2008-09) in the af2. He was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 while also earning First Team All-af2 American Conference honors.

Robinson is the team’s leader in interceptions with 28, and played in the 2009 ArenaCup Championship game against the Spokane Shock. Robinson played for the Orlando Predators (2007) registering 36.0 tackles, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

The former Cardinal was a four-year starter at Otterbein (2001-04), and was an All-OAC Player (2003-04). His 13 interceptions are tied for No. 1 in the school’s history, while also earning four letters. In 2003 he was a D3football.com All-American honorable mention.

JACKSONVILLE NATIVE YISRAEL JOINS SHARKS

JACKSONVILLE – The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Wednesday that offensive lineman Zarah Yisrael has been assigned to the team’s 2012 roster.

The 29-year-old Yisrael (6’2”, 320) is a Jacksonville native who played at Terry Parker High School. Yisrael began his collegiate career at Iowa Wesleyan in 2003, where he played one season before transferring to Troy. After sitting out the 2004 season due to NCAA transfer rules, Yisrael worked primarily at right guard during his two years with the Trojans.

After college, Yisrael spent time in camp with both the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints. In 2008, he was selected first overall by Team Arkansas in the All American Football League Draft, though the league folded before any games were played. Yisrael started at center for the AF2’s Rio Grande Valley Dorados in 2009, leading the team to a 9-7 record and a postseason berth.

CHILES CATCHES ON WITH NFL'S RAMS

JACKSONVILLE – The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Wednesday that wide receiver John Chiles has been placed on the AFL’s “Other League Exempt” list. Chiles has signed a contract with the National Football League’s St. Louis Rams and will join the team’s practice squad.

The 23-year-old Chiles (6’2”, 215) had been assigned to the Sharks’ 2012 roster in early October. He has not appeared in a game for the Sharks. Chiles attended the University of Texas, where he caught 65 passes for 752 yards and four touchdowns in his time with the Longhorns.

Chiles becomes the second player with Sharks ties to join the NFL in recent weeks. Fellow wideout Jamarko Simmons, who hauled in 27 receptions for 295 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Sharks this past season, signed with the New York Jets in late October.

FORMER IVY LEAGUER SEWALL ADDED TO ROSTER

JACKSONVILLE – The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks secured another offensive weapon on Tuesday, announcing that wide receiver Bobby Sewall has been assigned to the team’s 2012 roster.

The 23-year-old Sewall (6’1”, 195) most recently spent time with the Tennessee Titans during the 2010 season. He appeared in three preseason games with the team, though he did not catch a pass.

Sewall spent four years at Brown University, where he put together a stellar collegiate career. After working his way into the lineup as a freshman (7 receptions, 55 yards), he caught at least 66 passes in each of his final three years at the school. He recorded a career-high 69 catches for 948 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior in 2008, leading the team in all three categories. Overall, Sewall racked up 210 receptions for 2,141 yards and 16 touchdowns at Brown.

In addition to his work at receiver, Sewall also emerged as a threat when carrying the football. He led the Bears with 304 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in 2007 and again set the pace with six rushing touchdowns the following year. During his collegiate career, Sewall carried the ball 121 times for 581 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Sewall is a native of Portsmouth, RI.
