Nancy Pelosi Wants A Federal Babysitting Service

Suprisingly this is not from the Onion.
Buried in a Washington Post story about Herman Cain calling Nancy Pelosi, "Princess Nancy" is a new policy idea that Pelosi has been pitching recently during her short tour through California.

"One of the great pieces of unfinished business is high-quality child care; I wonder why we just can’t do that,’’ she recently said to a California audience.

By "we", Pelosi means the federal government. Pelosi clarified that Congress should be “doing for child care what we did for health-care reform.”

The Post characterizes Pelosi as touting the economic and social benefits of government child-sitting:

When it comes to “unleashing women” in a way that would boost the economy, she says, “this is a missing link.”
According to Pelosi, the babysitting market — one of the last unregulated sectors of the American economy — is broken.

“I could never get a babysitter — have five kids in six years and no one wants to come to your house. . . . And everywhere I go, women say the same thing,” she said.

This is an odd thing for Pelosi to be hearing since her San Francisco district has more dogs than children.

Perhaps after Pelosi boosts the economy by separating mothers from their gross offspring, she can work on "unleashing" dog-owners on the economy as well.

Oh, I can't wait to hear the spin on this one.

I'm just surprised she's up for this. Unless she's concurrently planning an organization of a Babysitters' Union.

there's a big difference between shooting the breeze at a cocktail party and actually trying to get this done.

we get it, none of you would vote for Nancy Pelosi. Her local constituents disagree.

I can see it now. She was being heckled by a tea partier who said, "We are sick of this NAnny state!" and Nancy said, "hey, what a good idea!".
she's a democrat. I'll defend her.
Wouldn't it just have been easier to say the above?

It's a stupid idea, and the fact that she even floated it says all you really need to know about her political philosophy. That you can't even bring yourself to call it what it is, Bit, is just sad.

In all seriousness the out-of-control nature of child care in this country is something that needs to be addressed. So I am all for the idea of doing something that makes child care more affordable in a society where, in many cases, both parents need to work. And, of course, the burden on single parents is even greater.

The cost of day care is stunning. And this is a case where the principles of capitalism work against what is best for society. The cost of day care is set by the market because many parents simply have no other alternative. In this case the government should step in to regulate the greed.

IJF....If this post doesn't show you basically are a socialist , nothing will. I have 3 daycare centers as clients, none of the owners make what a 7 year LI school teacher makes. I.e....they don't earn 6 figures, have NO PENSION and pay for their own health insurance.

Couldn't the high rate of property tax be thebreal culprit on why 2 people need to work?

Let's regulate them .....

You know, my wife and I could contribute so much more to the economy if the government would step in and do our dishes and laundry, too.

How exactly would you force the day care and its workers to work for less? You want to subsidize it from local, state or a federal level? You want to force school systems to include infant care so the community would have to pay for 6 months to 18 years? Last I checked schools and towns are crying poverty. Where is that money going to come from?

LOL, I just decided to get a dog and I have 2 kids. I think someone should pay for a dog walking service and after care after school.

When I was in the Air Force I always remember that whenever someone would ***** that they had kids so they needed to do something or didn't want to be deployed the Master Sargent in my unit would always say, "We didn't issue you a family".

Since when is it the government's job to fund your poor decisions? If you can't afford kids, use a condom.

We're all shocked that you chose to make a Tea Party comment rather than address the topic of an idiotic liberal proposal.

we already have it, the abysmal failure known as headstart. A babysitting program for lazy slobs who get to stay home and f all day (When they're not shoving chips and soft drinks down their throats)so they can have more kids. THE REAL 99%

people accuse me of being partisan and whatever else but that's lazy debating. You are attacking the source not the statement

first off she's at a party. it's not news.

second, even for the sake of discussion i dont see anything nefarious about the gov't watching children. they teach children but can't watch them?

by the way babysitting is one of the few jobs computers doesn't replace.... yet
