Good Article on the Jets' Serious Speed Issues
I tend to think 40-yard dash times are overemphasized at a lot of positions, even "speed positions" (Kerley, and slot receivers in general, are good cases). But this Wall Street Journal article paints a compelling picture that the Jets are one of the slowest teams in the NFL, and that their draft picks aren't helping. To wit: Not one of the Jets 2011 picks finished in the top half at their position in the forty.
The club's draft class was the only one in the NFL over the past five years that lacked a single player who finished in the top half of his position's 40-yard-dash. Even if not by design, the picks were part of an offseason in which the Jets got slower as a team whereas the rest of the NFL—taking advantage of league rules that benefit wide-open offenses—got faster. The retrospective is interesting when considering how the 2011 Jets often appeared to lack team speed. Offensively, fans groaned and analysts noted the lack of explosion on the outside—a notion that made sense, given that the Jets finished last season with a league-low of three pass plays of 40 yards or more (They were also one of just six NFL teams to finish the year without a run of 40 yards or more). The lack of big-play production, in some ways, likely stemmed from the team's free-agency moves. New York opted against bringing back deep threat Braylon Edwards, who was 28, and instead signed Plaxico Burress, who'd gone nearly three years without playing a professional game and was about to turn 34. Additionally, the club pursued and would later sign 37-year-old wideout Derrick Mason, a move that prompted 29-year-old Jerricho Cotchery to ask the Jets for his walking papers. Burress was effective in the redzone, scoring eight touchdowns, but had little success in the middle of the field and is a longshot to return for a second season with the club; Mason was unproductive as the team's third receiver and was traded to Houston after Week 5. He's since announced his retirement. Even on the defensive side of the ball, where the Jets were solid and ranked fifth in total yards, New York had glaring issues when it came to speed.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but I've been scared straight into drafting speed with every pick. For instance, I've been huge on getting George Iloka in the second or third to cover TEs, but now his 4.66 scares the crap out of me. BTW, long-time lurker, first time poster. |

A non manning thread thank god...
Yes we need way more speed on this team. Richardson or Floyd on offense Ingram on defense If these three are all gone, you look at Perry/Barron/Mercilus. |

Peyton Manning would solve the speed issues, catch the ball that he threw, run for 3000 yards and sack the qb. He would even be a gunner on special teams. #jets -manish

I think we should start paying attention to Wall Street Journal sports stories at approximately the same time that we pay attention to The Sporting News' financial news reports

Welcome to the board. Good article. I don't think Rex is trying to draft a slow team but I do think he's building a 1977 Super Bowl winning team in completely the wrong era.
If we don't get a defensive playmaker and an offensive playmaker in the draft we are not going to be a playoff team again in the near future. |

Come on man... guy had no coverage ability whatsoever. Speed is a great, but only if the player can do something with it. Gholston ran quick too... sigh never understood the love for Mays. Terrible football player. |

I expect more from you Mo. "no coverage ability"? Who gives a sh*t. ...that was the kind of answer i'd expect from JI's peanut gallery. (you know who you are) Let me asking something Mo. Answer with "yes" or "no" NOTHING ELSE. Was Brad Smith a prolific or productive WR coming into the NFL and during his time with the Jets? ____ (yes or no) Was Brad Smith a prolific or productive QB coming into the NFL and during his time with the Jets? ____ Was Brad Smith a prolific or productive RB coming into the NFL and during his time with the Jets? ___ Were the Jets able to utilize him in a way that catered to his strengths and thus made an impact player out of him? ____ ....do you see where I'm going with this? There's ways to use Mays (that sh*t rhymes for a +1) and make him a situation blitzer and destroyer of the screen game. |

What, the team that uses two TEs like i thought was a good idea? (shout-out to Pettigrew) To that I say... (Spend draft picks 2-4 on LBs that can cover) |

lam jones had speed to burn, how'd that work out? not dissing jones too much he just wasn't very good at catching the ball.
speed is just one part of the equation. the patsies never had great team speed with bruschi or vrabel but they still managed 3 super bowl wins and 5 appearances. moss had speed but no one to throw him the ball. so it takes much more than just speed. how about the jets drafting some players who want to play hard every play and have enough skills to play well each play. |

As Jets fans, if we can't see that this team is slow, then you need glasses. How many more time do we need to see Jet defenders chasing wide open receivers.
How many more times do we watch our receivers being covered like a blanket. This is a slow team and now fans are no willing to accept it. Wake up. The 2011-2012 Jets are a slow, poorly coached team. It's goIng to be a fun couple of months. |
