NYC Council Demands Federal Oversight Of NYPD Following Brutal Occupy Crackdown
Soon after news hit of 2 lawsuits documenting police brutality and rampant Freedom of Press violations, city council members are calling for federal oversight of the NYPD.
As I just reported 2 lawsuits have just been filed containing extensive evidence of repeated and rampant crimes committed by the NYPD against elected officials, “mainstream” journalists, civilian journalists, Occupy Wall Street protestors and even elected officials. Occupy Wall Street Files 2 Lawsuits Against NYPD Full Of Incriminating Evidence Two separate lawsuits have been filed against the NYPD for repeated violations of the constitutional rights of both protestors and media outlets trying to report on the movement. Read more… The filing of those lawsuits have prompted New York City Council members to demand federal government oversight of the NYPD following their brutal police crackdown and civil liberties trampling violations. City Council Members Make Federal Case Out Of Demand For NYPD Monitor Lawmakers cite alleged police misconduct at Occupy Wall St. protests Four City Council members are demanding a federal monitor for the NYPD because of alleged police brutality at Occupy Wall Street protests. In a suit filed Monday in Manhattan Federal Court, the lawmakers also seek unspecified monetary damages. Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez of Manhattan said his rights to observe the protests were violated when he was bloodied and arrested as police cleared Zuccotti Park last November. “The NYPD has to be more accountable,” he said at news conference on the steps City Hall. “The City Council has the right to be observers, and this is something that has been violated on a number of occasions.” The other plaintiffs are Council members Letitia James of Brooklyn, Melissa Mark-Viverito of Manhattan and Jumaane Williams of Brooklyn. The lawsuit also alleges civil rights violations on behalf of nearly a dozen Occupy Wall Street protesters who were arrested by police. Half of those say they were arrested while covering the protests as “citizen journalists.” Another plaintiff, Iraq War veteran Jeffrey McClain, said two of his ribs were fractured when he was busted by baton-wielding cops on a disorderly conduct charge. [...] Source:NY Daily News If the United States really cared about the rights of its citizens and the Constitution wasn’t just a facade that is followed selectively by the government as they see fit then we would have seen federal monitors of the NYPD along time ago. Unfortunately, it is well documented that the federal government in fact orchestrated the nationwide police crackdown while hypocritically condemning other nations overseas for doing the same thing
. The NYC City council, as well as most city councils, are filled with radical leftists far from the mainstream of society. Charles Barron, and his ilk, who I am sure the OP holds up high on a pedestal, are nothing but race-baiters out of the Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton school of shakedown artists. No surprise here.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me. |

There is a difference between the right to assemble, protest peacefully and redress grievances and the outright taking over of public spaces from the rest of society. They should have been moved out much earlier than they were.
The Mayor miscalculated by believing they would leave on their own and created a dangerous situation. OWS got too much leeway not too little. The police need to be supported when public officials let this kind of situations get out of hand. It doesn’t appear to me that any one was seriously hurt. If anything OWS was treated with way to much deference to begin with. |

You compare the rounding up and murder of innocents to supposedly aggressive police tactics in keeping the peace among thousands of anarchists illegally occupying areas of the city? Really? Save your outrage for a situation that calls for it. |

Well, the filth parade of Obnoxious Worthless Scum just made its way past my building. Thanks to them the Capital Grille and around a dozen other businesses lost a couple hours worth of customers; the hard-working people inside who rely on tips to responsibly pay their bills got the shaft; taxpayer costs for the huge police presence to contain these beasts must be through the roof; they left behind a trail of trash; and they disrupted mid-town traffic and the workday of all the hard-working people who rely on getting around the city.
I loudly offered one of the hundreds of cops $200 to "give one of them a wood shampoo," but was kindly rebuffed with a few nods and smiles by our boys in blue. |
