Disagree completely. (not about the blocking tho) they'll lock him up long term next year, for about 60-65% of what they gave Gronk. Hernandez is more of a hybrid WR than a pure TE. There's a place for that on this team.
I think he will expect more along the line of 6 years 40 mill with the same bonus structure of Gronk. Or maybe 4-24 extension so that his is a FA again when he is 27YO |
You are going a long way to make a point here. I'm not sure what it is.
The Patriots have signed its 2nd most valuable offensive asset to a a very reasonable contract, by ANYONE'S assessment. His a weekly missmatch nightmare, and 28 TD's in just 2 years is a huge number (Holmes has 34 in SIX years. Sorry I couldn't help mayself)....AND he has upside. That's all there is to it. The Pats have had their share of dumb contracts just like every team. Just look at the $5MM they paid Ellis and the $6MM they paid Ocho. Lee Bodden ate up a lot of money for just one good season out of 3. the only difference is that is very rare the the Pats get snagged with big money long term contracts that don't work out (a la Scott, Pace, Holmes, etc) Personally I don't think the the non-signings of Branch, Seymour, Law, or Samuel cost the Pats any super bowl wins. But it is an interesting and on going debate for Pats fans as well. What people who believe that it has fail to consider is the effect that keep them would have made. What players would have been let go so the Pats could have kept Law, Samuel, etc. I remember one discussion (to bring this all full circle) when the poster demonstrated that if the Pats don't trade Seymour, there IS no Gronk.
Guess what? I wasn't talking to you Ken. Evidenced further by the fact you went off the topic I was discussing with the OTHER poster . So STFU you boring SOB. Last edited by Jordy; 06-09-2012 at 12:58 PM. |

What holes? Cap situation changes every year, dead money frees up, increase in cap dollars available. Last time Patriots had to make a big choice was between paying Wilfork or Seymour. Yeah, it's tough having to choose between Pro Bowlers. Patriots Salary Cap Limit: $128,991,862 Current Patriots Total: $117,293,489 Current Estimated Cap Space: $11,698,373 Looks like Pats have plenty of room to sign their 2 rookies that are left and sign Hernandes to a new contract should they want to. Wes could even be signed to a 2 or 3 year deal and save more cap space. I think BB knows what he's doing. Last edited by Spectre; 06-09-2012 at 02:04 PM. It strikes me that this deal is as good or bad as the arms of this year's D1 redshirt quarterbacks.

I was responding your ludicrous assertion that the Pats were losers because the haven't won a superbowl since 2004. And they haven't won another super bowl because they got rid of a lot players that they refused to pay top of the market rates to like Law and Samuel.
Hey I understand how frustrating it must be to see the Pats do it well, while the Jets wind up with millstone contracts like the ones you've given to Pace, Scott, and Holmes. BTW- after all the talk, Gronks deal breaks down like this. Its really 2 four year deals. The first is for 4 years at an average of $4.55MM. Then after the 2015 season the Pats have an option for another 4 years at $9.3MM/yr |

He had a great season, but only 1, and that's when he came out of nowhere and teams weren't ready for him. Teams will be scheming for him now. He'll be a good but not great TE, and that's if he doesn't aggravate one of his existing injuries. Patriots could have taken a wait-and-see approach for one more season but wanted some headlines to distract from Kraft's gal-pal. Dumb move.

The Pats control Gronk for 8 years now....but essentially this is two 4 year contracts. The first 4 years equate to what salaries Gronk would have been originally paid in the last 2 years of his rookie contract, the expected franchise $$$ in '14, and the expected franchise $$$ for '15 plus 20%= $18+ million. (1+1+7+9=18). Gronk gets some up front coin and Belichick gets to smooth out the cap #s.
After fours, the Pats have the option to continue with the contract or end it and let him hit the market. Summary....4 years with a team option of 4 more years at double the cost. Now if they can get Hernandez hooked into a two year extension similar to Gronks (1+1+7+9)....then the Patriots can lock up 170 catches/2200yds/25 TDs yearly (they hope) over the next 4 years at a total yearly cost of $9 mill/year combined.....that's a bargain any GM would kill for considering the production. |

welker also cost his team an sb win. no matter how anyone wants to slice the last superbowl, if welker makes that catch it's game over.
but the real bottom line is how much guaranteed money gronkowski gets.
Wes Welker has been there longer and has contributed more to that team than Gronkowski has so far. He is considered by some to be the best receiver in the NFL. Why wouldn't he be pissed? Especially considering Gronkowski's coming off an injury.
|

not a dumb move to lock up a good player but if the money is true he's getting paid an awful lot for his position. how much of that is guaranteed?

For the moment, only his signing bonus ($8 M ) is guaranteed. His salary remains unchanged for the next 2 seasons. After 2015, the team has to exercise a $10M option which will mean he'd be under contract through 2019, and he gets $13m in skill guarantees and $18m for injury. |
