The moisture is coming from somewhere. And the age of the roof means nothing. One shingle can blow out of place in a storm and that is all it takes. Also the attic fan could be another culprit. Go with a flashlight and follow the water stains, it will lead you to the point of entry.
Thanks for the advice, no HVAC I'll take pics and post them.

Mold sucks. I had a small pipe leak in my basement a few years back and because I had all of my stuff up on pallets, I didn't notice it.

By the time I noticed, I removed the pallets and had a load of mold. Fortunately it was in the only unfinished part of the basement where the hot water heater, oil burner and storage are.

I removed everything and bleached the ever living crap out of the place. I'm sure the attic is much worse.

Good luck.

I have two trees close to the house. One of me can be seen in the picture and is right near where the f***er tore through the roof. Both friggin' trees will be cut down soon.

The next thing I know, I see two eyes staring back at me in the dark.
I was a little freaked because I know that raccoons are nocturnal and if you see them awake during the day, that could mean they are rabid.

Turns out that was the least of my problems.

Lack of ventilation is a huge culprit in causing mold in attics and crawl spaces, you need plenty of venting along the eves and at the ridge line of the roof to allow for convection ventilation, the power fan will help but you mite want to put it on a timer rather then just a thermostat.

What happens is the attic gets hot due to the sun and then cools at night causing condensation.

Hence ridge vent.

I just spent the past week insulating a 6,000 sq ft attic. It was awesome!!

Except this one had a nice size hole dug right through the roof.

It's times like these when I miss GMC's pure intellectual genius.

You must of been blowing it in, that's a lot of insulation.

Attics can get up to 140 hot degrees. Definitively want to take advantage of cloudy days and early mornings when doing attic work.

I hope it paid.

Jeebus. What was the square footage of the home? And this was in Buffalo? Was this, like, the King of Buffalo?

When I was on the verge of buying my first (and present) house, my friend Gary advised me "The problem with owning a house is that everything in the freaking world wants to get into it." Absolutely correct. From sun to water to snow to ice to damp to bugs to critters of every shape imaginable, your home where they want to set up shop. Owning a house is a constant struggle against becoming a landlord to a bunch of non-rent paying nature deadbeats.
