LOL. Took me a minute to see why you asked that.
Sadly, I agree with everything else in that post. Unless there's a major surprise (Sanchez lights it up, defense returns to '09 form), the Jets are fighting for the 6th seed at best this year. This team would be projected to be in the cellar if they replaced the Browns in the AFC North. All that cutting Pace, Scott & Smith this year would have done is ensure that the remote shot at the 6th seed was no longer a possibility. |

My two cents:
-I have really been softening on Eric Smith after hating on him for most of the off-season. He played with gimpy legs most of the season and was overused, so his barely-adequate speed was transformed into completely inadequate speed. Once he's back at barely-adequate and playing in a three or four man rotation (with Bush or, God willing, someone like Steed stepping up in coverage), I think we'll like him just fine. -Pace is probably as good as a football player can be without being great. He's transitioned from being a pressure-type DE to an hybrid OLB who can do a little bit of everything. I think he's got two or three years left. But the price tag could mean that 2012 is it for him. -Basically the same goes for Bart Scott. I think he would be a valuable cog in any defenses ILB corps for a lot of years -- he's not done yet. The only question is money. Is he willing to be paid like a role-player? |

Were his legs gimpy in Week 5 when he was the deep safety in a Cover 4 of all things and bit on a play action, thus allowing Wes Welker over the top and letting him to go 60+ yards? |

Cutting the two of them, Hunter and Smith saves the Jets 22M. Some of that money will go to extending Revis.
But you want to talk "insane"? Look ahead to 2014. Our only FAs that year will be: John Connor Joe McKnight Vlad Ducasse Nick Bellore Garrett McIntyre TJ Conley And the last 3 are restricted. Currently under contract for that season: QB: Sanchez, Tebow, McElroy RB: Powell, Ganaway WR: Holmes, Hill, Kerley, White, Adams OT: Ferguson, Hunter (will have been cut, though), Griffen OG: Schlauderoff, Campbell C: Mangold TE: Hayden Smith DE: Coples, Wilkerson, Brett Roy DT: Pouha, Ellis, Harrison LB: Scott (will have been cut), Harris, Davis, Dowtin CB: Revis (extended), Cromartie, Wilson, Fletcher, Lynn, Steed S: Bush, Allen Obviously, there are some real holes there to be addressed: RB, OG, RT, TE, LB, S. But some of those holes will have been addressed in the 2013 draft and free agency (particularly RB, OL, and TE - since Greene, Slauson, Moore and Keller are all FAs after this year), and the Jets will have a ton of cap room free with the cap going up. |

Jordy, u da man, Jet fan born in '61? Anyways, its a very tormenting life being a Jet Fan...I'm with you...No Disrespect...the problem (looking in from the outside) is becoming consorting w/ the enemy. We in conjunction w/ The Mods, have specialists en route for your rescue, ...no worries...We believe you have been drugged possibly by PatFnTx or one of his consortium of endless, lowly drunkard hoodlums. Hang in there, we're on our way...

... your first sentence nails the issue ...
... this is not the yankees and mlb's pay whatever you want propaganda machine ... ... the NFL is dictacted by a salary cap ... as such ... we can not just cut whomever we chose and pay somebody new whatever we'd like ... l_j_r |

I'm not saying the Jets will be in cap hell, just that no team can rely on a sudden boon to the cap going forward. |

I agree 100% with the talent level here but more than anything its also on the offensive side of the ball. I'm not sure if we've upgraded at receiver at all, if our o line depth is upgraded going into the season at all compared to last year ...remember ROb Turner was there for us going into the season last year and he got hurt but we had him going into the season. His injury killed our depth but even going into this season our depth at receiver sucks, O Line sucks, and we don't have any real pass rushers that are a legit threat and need to be accounted for aside from Maybin. I'm hoping Maybin ends up even improving from last year but offensively I don't see how we're surrounding Sanchez with the best pieces. Call me crazy but I think our offensive talent is as bad as its been since the Chad era. I'm not even talking about 4-5 2001 Rams type of receivers but legit receivers at TE, a proven #2 kind of guy with some size and you know for sure is good for 60 catches. With the talent we have at receiver and especially unproven along with the back up TE's and etc ... you would think we'd be trading some picks to get a top RB in this years draft or trading for a legit RB around the league. We have no choice but to be ground and pound this year with the receiver depth we have. What else can we do? If we can't run the ball we're F'd. But totally agree we'll be battling Bills for 2nd place and trying to get that 6th seed this year if the roster remains the same. |

Starting next year players who don't get performance bonus's can be cut before June 1st and somehow there's no cap hit. There's so much sh*T that goes into this every single year that this is the reason why teams just have 1 freaking guy to focus on the cap. As fans on a forum we have normal lives (aside from Jordy) ... so at the end of the day we can crunch the numbers that are given to the public but there's a lot more variables that come into play aside from those numbers. The problem is that as folks on a forum we don't have access to the information that these cap specialist have to determine everything accurately. Not even media gets it so everyone should just shut up about what they THINK they know about someone's cap situation going into next season or beyond cause they don't know ANYTHING. |
